Full-Time Faculty Position: Assistant Professor of Scripture

Summary of Position

Oblate School of Theology, a Roman Catholic school of Theology and Ministry serving the

Southwest United States, invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Scripture with a

preferred start date of August 2025. A specialization in the New Testament is preferred. The

course load is five graduate classes per year.

The candidate should possess a firm commitment to the robust Catholic tradition of

interpretation that is both attentive and responsive to the complex challenges confronting the

Church as it proclaims the gospel. Research in a variety of specializations and issues is welcome,

including, but not limited to areas such as the Synoptic Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and

Hermeneutics.

Critical scholarship in service of the pastoral needs of the Church and the Catholic faithful is

particularly valued. In view of these pastoral needs, the ideal candidate will be comfortable with

fostering inter-cultural approaches to Scripture (Hispanic, Asian, or African-American

Hermeneutics.) Teaching responsibilities also include elective courses in one’s area of expertise,

especially as they support the MA in Sacred Scripture and the Graduate Certificate in Sacred

Scripture. The candidate would also be open to undertaking some advising and administrative

duties relating to the field of Sacred Scripture in other degree programs.

The successful candidate will be a Roman Catholic in good standing, who meets the

requirements of Ex Corde Ecclesiae and is willing to request or possesses a mandatum. See:

https://www.usccb.org/committees/catholic-education/guidelines-concerning-academicmandatum He or she will also be willing and able to work with colleagues in all aspects of

graduate professional theological education in an ecumenically diverse setting. This includes

serving on faculty committees, advising and mentoring students, and directing theses and

dissertations for the MA, DMin, and PhD programs.

Inspired by the charism of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Oblate School of

Theology educates, forms, and renews men and women to “preach the Gospel to the most

abandoned.” Established in 1903, OST is a vibrant and complex educational institution that

provides theological and ministerial leadership in both academic and professional degrees. Its

PhD program in Spirituality has grown exponentially in the ten years since its beginning. In the

MDiv program, the school is committed to the pastoral and theological education and formation

of students from seven dioceses and seven different religious orders who are studying for

priesthood. Other established programs include academic degrees such as the MA in Theology,

the MA in Spirituality, and the recently launched MA in Sacred Scripture. Professional programs

include the DMin, the MDiv, the MA in Pastoral Ministry, and the Maestría de Artes en

Ministerio Pastoral which is offered bilingually in Spanish and English. OST likewise resources

the local church with several vibrant lay certificate programs. Institutes such as the Sankofa

Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership, the Institute for the Study of Contemporary

Spirituality, and the Instituto de Formación Pastoral provide academic homes for students

studying across the degree programs.
