Responsibilities

The Criminology Program at Johnson C. Smith University is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor of Criminology to begin in the Fall 2024 semester. The position is tenure track.

The successful candidate will teach a 4/4 load, in person courses; evening courses may be required. In addition, the candidate will be required to serve as an academic advisor, engage in university and community service, and any other responsibilities as outlined in the university faculty handbook.

Qualifications

Earned PhD or EdD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or closely related discipline. The JD, DJS, or other similar law degree is not appropriate for the position and persons with this degree need not apply. Applicants who are ABD and a defense date by May 2025 will be considered. All degrees must be from regionally accredited colleges and universities. Official transcripts will have to be provided upon hire.

Previous experience in teaching excellence with undergraduate students. Successful applicants must be able to teach introductory and upper-division courses, in all areas of Criminology, including law enforcement, courts, corrections (community based and institutional), research, statistics, and cyber-intelligence. In addition, successful applicants must be able to teach special topics in emerging fields and topics (e.g. emergency management, forensics, crime scene and fraud investigations).

Demonstrated experience with diversity, excellence, and inclusion.

Record of scholarly publication or show promise to be able to produce scholarly publications. Candidates must have a clearly articulated research agenda.

Demonstrated ability in curriculum development.

Must be able to develop and foster relationships with the criminal justice community.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate and promote student-centered learning.

Demonstrated experience of successful interaction with academically and culturally diverse student populations.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who are experienced in emerging areas of Criminology/Criminal Justice, including, but not limited to Cyber-intelligence, Forensics, Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Crime Scene and Fraud Investigations.

Experience serving as an advisor to student-based organizations.

Effective experience in grant proposal writing, with successful track-record in securing grant funding.

Active engagement in a professional organization related to the discipline.

Experience in effectively supervising undergraduate research and record of student publication and/or presentations at professional conferences.

Experience with professional presentations at scholarly or practitioner state, regional, and/or national conferences.

Documented experience with experiential learning strategies and curricula.
