About the Role

The Manager, Safer Community Program (SCP) oversees the delivery of support services for students and staff impacted by bullying, discrimination, sexual misconduct, and other concerning behaviors. Reporting to the Associate Director (Campus Community), this role leads a team providing specialised case management and interventions, while also overseeing programs like International Under 18 Student Support. The Manager collaborates across the University to manage complex student behavior issues and contributes to the broader Student and Scholarly Services leadership team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the effective day-to-day delivery of Safer Community Program services, in line with relevant legislation, standards, policies and procedures, and strategic commitments such as the University’s Respect and safety initiatives, and SASS service implementation priorities.
  • Enable a culture of high standard service delivery in specialist areas relating to sexual misconduct, child safety, gender affirmation, and work with advisors to apply best practice approaches to their professional practice.
  • Lead a team of advisors, ensuring efficient work practices and all team members meet their yearly performance and professional development goals. Ensure all team members comply with all university standards, policies and procedures and that mandatory training is completed.
  • Collaborate with external and university colleagues in the management of complex student and staff safety matters, including the monitoring of emerging and ongoing behavioural risk situations informed by comprehensive assessments and understanding of best practice response strategies.

Who we are looking for

The ideal candidate possesses strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills, enabling the development and delivery of innovative safety-focused programs. They have exceptional interpersonal, communication, and organisational abilities, demonstrating tact, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach that effectively informs and influences others.

You will also have:

  • A post graduate tertiary qualification with management experience in a large complex organisation, preferably in the higher education sector, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and or education/training.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing specialist safety and support services within a university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in contributing to the management of complex behavioural presentation or conduct matters, informed by current best practice risk assessment frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading service provision in relation to disclosures and reports of sexual misconduct and family/intimate partner violence, informed by an in depth understanding of relevant legislation and reporting pathways for victim survivors.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

Student and Scholarly Services provides student administration and services from recruitment and point of enquiry to graduation. This team also delivers wellbeing and scholarly services to students and staff.  A mix of professionals who represent a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and gender identities. Our growing multidisciplinary team has professional backgrounds spanning social work, counselling, organisational consultancy, and people and culture. Collectively, we have worked in hospitals, community-based support agencies, emergency services, and tertiary education settings nationally and globally. We have specialist expertise in sexual misconduct, family and intimate partner violence, discrimination, child safety, gender affirmation, risk assessment and personal and online safety, with lived experience among our staff in some key areas. We are also experienced in critical incident management, organisational cultural change and staff capacity building. Our team connects with experts in other areas of the University as needed.
