OFFICIAL TITLE: Technical Assistant I, Environmental Science Laboratory Technician (.75 FTE)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Department Chair of Earth, Environment and Physics
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May supervise student personnel, as assigned
General Statement of Duties: The Technical Assistant I, Environmental Science Laboratory Technician is responsible for managing Earth & Environmental Sciences laboratories and campus geographic information systems (GIS) infrastructure.
Responsibilities:

- (E) Maintains GIS, environmental science, and geology laboratories.
- (E) Works with environmental science and geology instructors to maintain samples, equipment and provide support for field activities.
- (E) Maintains and develops departmental laboratory and field equipment and assists in the development of instructions and manuals for the use of the equipment.
- (E) Maintains the Patch Watershed Science Center field site and provides support for classroom activities, student research, and canoe upkeep.
- (E) Operates the department's UAV/drones for academic, educational, research, and marketing purposes. Coordinates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on equipment registration and flight operations.
- (E) Provides GIS expertise to faculty, students and outside clients.
- (E) Administers Worcester State's ArcGIS online platform and ArcGIS server.
- (E) Works with the Information Technology Department to maintain GIS lab and geospatial technology equipment.
- (E) Procures departmental equipment and software; negotiates pricing of supplies with vendors.
- (E) Supervise work study students.
- (E) Assists with administrative tasks for the department, including but not limited to recordkeeping and inventory.
- (E) Assists with providing academic support for students, as assigned.
- (E) Conducts and/or participates in field trips, as assigned.
- (E) Serves as a role model and mentor for students, as appropriate.

Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to learn new skills and equipment as needed.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as manuals, specifications, blueprints, drawings, plans, etc.
- Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing assigned unit activities.
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment, gauges and instrumentation.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to operate standard laboratory equipment.
- Ability to prepare laboratory experiments.
- Ability to identify material needs and order necessary supplies.
- Ability to collect and analyze data.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
- Enthusiasm for working outdoors in a wide variety of conditions.
- Manual dexterity and strength, mechanical aptitude.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, GIS, or closely related field.
- Proficiency in the use of the ESRI GIS product line especially ArcPro.
- Valid driver's license.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple, ongoing projects.
- Professional competence as evidenced by personal growth and development and recognition thereof by professional colleagues.
- Experience in developing online geospatial applications.
- Field experience in environmental and/or geological Sciences and analysis.

This is a grade 11, non-exempt, part-time (28 hours/week), benefited AFSCME position. The bi-weekly salary is $1,316.04 (annual salary is $34,216.97).
