The Department of Microbiology and Immunology conducts high quality fundamental and applied research in microbiology, immunology and virology, and is recognised for excellent teaching and a strong postgraduate programme. The small class preparation team supports teaching and research through student support, teaching assistance, waste management and research support. The role/Te mahi
As a technician in the class preparation team, you will be a member of the small team responsible for the preparation of materials for the undergraduate courses run by the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Duties will include preparation and provision of materials and cultures to support the teaching within these courses, as well as maintenance of equipment and stocks of microorganisms and chemicals.
You will have the opportunity to work with a range of people across the department, including academic staff, teaching staff and students.

You will be the type of person who enjoys a close collaborative role with relationships to other class preparation technicians. You will also have the capability to work independently and have strong organisational skills.
Other important attributes include:
• Familiarity with computers.
• Familiarity with typical laboratory equipment including centrifuges, water baths, incubators, class II biological safety cabinets etc.
• Familiarity with biological and chemical regulations and safety.
• Microbiological and immunological skill sets including culturing microorganisms, bacteriophages and mammalian cell cultures.
• Familiarity with microbiology techniques, particularly staining techniques.
• Accurate record keeping.
• Ability to manage time.
• Good communication skills
A MSc or higher degree in microbiology or allied field, or a National Diploma in Science and/or prior equivalent microbiology experience are required.

This is a permanent part-time (30 hours per week/0.8FTE) position, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, with an intended start date in early March 2026.
There is the opportunity for personal development including first aid certification and certification in electrical testing.
The salary range for this position is Level 5 from $69,931 to $74,609, Top of Range $80,285.
