The York School of Architecture (YSA) is one of the University of York’s exciting transformational initiatives. The school’s expertise is interdisciplinary, building on York research strengths in culture, community, computation, environment and geography, heritage and social policy to create a school that supports our commitment to public good. The new school welcomed its first students in September 2025 on the BA (honours) Architecture course, in our newly refurbished studio spaces and technical facilities. The school will expand its taught programmes to postgraduate courses from 2028.

Role
This role is central to the delivery of a high-quality student experience in YSA. The postholder will provide skilled technical support in architectural model making, ensuring the safe operation of equipment. Facilities include a range of analogue workshop machinery alongside digital fabrication technologies and a dedicated computer lab. The Technician will provide inductions, demonstrations, and training in model-making techniques, from handcrafting with various materials to advanced digital fabrication methods. They will help maintain workshop equipment, follow health and safety procedures, and contribute to the effective running of the technical facilities. The role also supports as a Departmental Computing Officer, assisting with IT, AV and plotters within the Computer Labs and further technical facilities.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
- Proven experience with traditional and digital fabrication tools (e.g., woodworking equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines)
- Knowledge of materials relevant to architectural model making, including timber, plastics, and composites.
- Ability to demonstrate and train others in safe and effective use of workshop tools and equipment.
- Experience of maintaining and repairing workshop equipment.
- Competence troubleshooting IT AV / Printing / Software related issues
- An undergraduate degree in architecture, product design, engineering or equivalent relevant experience
- Knowledge of relevant safety regulations & procedures, for example COSHH and risk assessment
- Knowledge and ability to implement practical techniques used in relevant work area
- Ability to perform complex technical tasks to a consistent high standard with attention to detail
- Ability to plan and take responsibility for own work using initiative, seeking advice where necessary
- IT skills for a wide range of applications, including Google Apps and specialist software where appropriate
- Ability to present complex ideas in a clear and concise manner
- Competent in use of advanced technical equipment and techniques
- Ability to analyse and interpret data and explain complex information to others
- Ability to assess non-routine problems by suggesting solutions
