Section of Plant Biology

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Ithaca, New York

About the College

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

Without plants, life on earth would cease to exist. Plants shape our environment and provide us with food, medicine, clothing and shelter. Today we are faced with an unprecedented series of challenges -- global climate change, food shortages, rapid loss of biodiversity and new and evolving diseases are threatening both the health of the planet as well as human health and well-being.

Through its broad-based and innovative studies of basic plant biology, the Plant Biology Section at Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science is positioned to contribute real and impactful solutions to these problems at local, state, national and global scales.

What We Need

As a member of Dr. Margaret Frank's lab, you will assist lab members in data collection and execution of experiments designed to investigate the genetics and genomics of plant grafting. You will provide routine to moderately complex technical lab support for a research program/facility. Other duties include:

  • Preparing standard stains, media, buffers, and reagents.
  • Recording experimental data, analyzing, and sharing results through preliminary reports to lab members.
  • Performing routine lab procedures, including DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and sequencing preparation, using established protocols.
  • Preparing and maintaining standard tissue and cell culture for experimentation.
  • Analyzing data using straightforward statistical methods and computer software.
  • Complete training on lab safety and proper handling of chemicals as required by CALS Environment, Health, and Safety.

We are looking for a talented individual with an excellent work ethic, who appreciates working in a research setting. Specifically, we need someone who has the following:

  • High School Diploma and 2 years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Prior knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite - including Word, PowerPoint and Excel and familiarity with Outlook.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and well-being.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.

  • Associate's Degree in biology, horticulture, or a similar field.

This is a temporary part-time position at 20 hours/week. This three-month appointment is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.
