Description

WVU Olympic Sports Nutrition is seeking a Sports Nutrition Fellow who is hardworking, passionate, and interested in working with Division I college athletes competing in the following sports:

  • Women's Tennis
  • Women's Volleyball
  • Men's Wrestling
  • Women's and Men's soccer
  • Men's and Women's Basketball
  • Women's Track and Cross Country
  • Baseball
  • Men's and Women's Rifle
  • Men's Golf
  • Women's Rowing
  • Women's Gymnastics
  • Men's and Women's Swim and Dive

The fellow will work more exclusively with specific teams as assigned by the Director of Sports Nutrition but will be allowed some experience with additional teams if desired. Daily activities and schedules will vary depending on individual team lift, practice, meal, and competition schedules.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing fueling station duties, including but not limited to ordering, receiving, storage organization, and inventory management.
  • Management of fueling station volunteers/ students and operations.
  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
  • Body composition measurements and assessments via BodPod.
  • Counsel in hydration protocols. Recommend appropriate pre-, during-, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual training, team practices, and competition.
  • Development and implementation of educational materials, team talks, cooking demonstrations, meal plans, and grocery store tours.
  • Address nutritional challenges to performance, i.e., food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
  • Counsel student-athletes, in conjunction with strength and conditioning coaches and athletic trainers, on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, recovery from exercise, illness or injury, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
  • Evaluate nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; monitor use of appropriate supplementation.
  • Assist in menu development for individual team meals and Olympic Sports Training Table.
  • Maintain ongoing communications with interdisciplinary team members regarding nutritional issues affecting student athletes.
  • Content creation and posting to WVUfuel social media accounts.
  • Attendance of assigned team practices, meals, and competitions as hours allowed.
  • Meet with prospective student athletes during official and unofficial visits to discuss the nutritional program and services available to student athletes.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Sports Nutrition for Olympic Sports.

Commitment

  • The internship is 8.5 months.
  • Must be willing to work unconventional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Predicted start date is August 10th (flexible)

Compensation

  • $15.00/hour, 32.25 hours/week for 8.5 months

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Nutrition Sciences, Exercise Physiology or equivalent required.
  • At least (1) year of sports nutrition-related experience is strongly preferred (voluntary or paid positions)
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Strong understanding of food safety.
  • Strong and dependable work ethic.
  • Strong leadership, social, communication, and organizational skills.

Requirements

Licenses/Certifications

  • RD or RD-eligible required. Must become an RD within 2 months of hire. Must also be eligible for licensure in the state of West Virginia.
