Basic and/or Translational Infectious Disease Research
Rutgers University, New Jersey Medical School
Newark, NJ
The Rutgers University Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) and Center for Emerging Pathogens invite applications for one of multiple tenure and tenure-track faculty appointments at the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor levels. We broadly seek candidates with expertise and interest in basic and/or translational research for infectious diseases caused by, but not limited to, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tubercular mycobacteria, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, drug-resistant ESKAPE or fungal pathogens, and/or viral pathogens of pandemic potential. Research programs can be focused on any area of infectious disease, including basic research on pathogen biology, host responses to infection, host-pathogen interactions, and/or infectious disease progression and translational research on diagnostic technologies, drug discovery, other therapeutic interventions, and/or vaccine development. Research programs can also span any area of in vitro, in vivo, and/or in silico investigation.
PHRI and the Center for Emerging Pathogens are integral components of the Rutgers Health Institute for Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases (i3D). Research in infection and inflammation have been selected for strategic development by Rutgers University with strong institutional support to establish Rutgers as a center of excellence. Located at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ, the PHRI and Center for Emerging Pathogens occupy the International Center for Public Health (ICPH) research building, home to a NIH-supported and CDC-certified Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL). The RBL possesses state-of-the-art technologies for in vitro and in vivo investigation of Biosafety Level-3 pathogens. Other Core Facilities in and around the ICPH building include resources for confocal and super-resolution microscopy, flow cytometry, non-invasive whole animal imaging, spatial transcriptomics and mass spectrometry, gnotobiotic research, advanced genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, and high-performance computing.
Candidate Requirements:
Applicants must possess a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, post-doctoral training, excellent communication skills, and a record of productivity in basic and/or translational infectious disease research. Candidates for the Assistant Professor level will be expected to establish a cutting-edge and extramurally-funded research program. Candidates at the Associate Professor level must already possess a national scientific reputation, current research funding, and a history of scientific mentorship and leadership. Candidates at the Professor level must also possess additional evidence of distinction above that of an Associate Professor, including international recognition. The position will be supported by a competitive start up package with exceptional candidates being considered for further support as Chancellor Scholars. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
