Job Description:
Coppin State University, a fully accredited Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and a member of the University System of Maryland, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The Department offers bachelor’s degree programs in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Cyber Security Engineering, and seeks dedicated teacher-scholars committed to high-quality undergraduate education. Applicants from all areas of the mathematical sciences are welcome.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics core courses and who are familiar with professional computational and programming tools such as Mathematica, MATLAB, R, Python, C++, or similar languages. Experience working with professional Integrated Development Environments is highly desirable. Candidates with an active or emerging research agenda, grant-writing experience, and interest in developing advanced mathematics curricula are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience teaching computer science or cybersecurity engineering courses is considered a plus.
Founded in 1900, Coppin State University is an urban, residential liberal arts institution located in northwest Baltimore. The university provides academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education, and is recognized for its commitment to student success and community engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver instruction for twelve credits hours (typically 4 courses) at the undergraduate level; manage and help develop the mathematics courses, instructional materials and mathematical computing-labs projects; develop face-to-face and on-line instructional materials; continually refine curricula and introduce new trendy and high-demand courses; provide advising and mentoring to majors, provide support to student's instructional and clubs activities; participate in University-wide faculty and students’ outreach activities.
- Advance research or scholarly activity involving publications and grant-proposal writing with an expectation of developing cross-curricular research projects.
- Participate in university-wide, college-wide, and department-wide committee assignments; design and develop faculty development workshops delivered in the MCS department and externally in the professional conferences; participate in internal and external service activities.
- Other tasks necessary to support the activities within the department.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION
- PhD. in Mathematics from an accredited university.
EXPERIENCE
- Experience teaching college-level mathematics and related subjects teaching to a diverse group of students, including minority student population, is preferred.
- Evidence of an ability to maintain active scholarly research agenda.
- Evidence of grant activity and funded/unfunded attempts;
- Evidence of cross-disciplinary activity as it relates to STEM education innovation and culturally responsive curriculum and instruction.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with internal and external constituents.
- Excellent fundamental programming skills, such as C, C++, Python and R.
- Ability to work with professional Integrated Development Environment Systems, is highly desirable; and
- Ability to lead undergraduate research projects.
