Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Marine and Geological Carbon Dioxide Removal

Job Description

The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC) at Yale University invite applications for a tenure-track appointment at any rank (assistant, associate or full professor) in the areas of marine and geological carbon dioxide removal and greenhouse gas mitigation. A start date of July 2026 or later is expected for this position. We encourage applicants from disciplines including (but not limited to) physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, as well as geochemistry, petrology, and sedimentology.

The focus of the YCNCC is to foster research on carbon capture and greenhouse gas reduction using ecological, geological and oceanographic approaches. The Center’s areas of interest include ocean alkalinity enhancement; management and restoration of forest and grassland ecosystems; blue carbon; agricultural practices; and enhanced weathering. The YCNCC faculty work in multiple academic units including the Yale School of the Environment, and departments in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering & Applied science, specifically the Departments of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical & Environmental Engineering. The academic appointment will be in Earth & Planetary Sciences, but the new faculty member will play a critical role in the ongoing development and success of the YCNCC. The successful candidate will continue and expand on the important collaborations between the YCNCC and EPS, which are currently in the areas of enhanced weathering and ocean alkalinity enhancement.

We seek candidates who will develop outstanding research programs, who have strong prospects for exceptional scholarly impact and teaching excellence, and who will enhance the existing strengths of the Department, the Center, and the University. The successful applicant will develop and implement an independent, externally funded research program, advise students, facilitate interdisciplinary research, contribute to an inclusive and vibrant academic environment, and teach courses in their specialty and related areas.

The University is committed to basing judgments concerning the admission, education, and employment of individuals upon their qualifications and abilities and seeks to attract its faculty, staff, and student body qualified persons from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives. Additionally, in accordance with this Policy and as delineated by federal and Connecticut law, Yale does not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, or employment against any individual on account of that individual’s sex; sexual orientation; gender identity or expression; pregnancy, childbirth or related conditions; race; color; national or ethnic origin; religion; age; disability; protected veteran status, or other protected classes as set forth in federal and Connecticut law.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of hire.

Application Details

Applicants should submit (1) a letter of application (~1 page), (2) a curriculum vitae including a full list of publications, (3) a statement of research interests including how the applicant's research program would contribute to scalable solutions for greenhouse gas reduction (~2-3 pages), and (4) a statement of interests in teaching, mentoring, and broader impacts (~2-3 pages). Applicants should also provide the names and contact information of three professional references who can provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Applications should be submitted online https://apply.interfolio.com/170225. For information regarding the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, visit http://earth.yale.edu. For information regarding the YCNCC, visit https://naturalcarboncapture.yale.edu/. Questions regarding the application process can be addressed to YCNCC Senior Administrative Assistant Katherine Gaynor (ycncc@yale.edu). Review of applications will begin October 1, 2025.
