Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The School of Nursing within the College Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member for a Distinguished Professorship who meets the rank requirements of a tenured professor. This is a nine-month position scheduled to begin Fall Semester 2026. This position is for an initial five-year term, and, upon review, the distinguished professor is eligible to receive two renewable five-year appointments.

The Distinguished Professorship is a prestigious designation awarded to a faculty member who has achieved prominence through exceptional scholarly and professional accomplishments in research and education. This role recognizes individuals with a sustained record of nursing excellence and leadership in their field. The Distinguished Professor will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction and mentorship to students, conducting innovative and impactful research that advances knowledge, and engaging in service activities that promote the mission of the SON and benefit the broader academic and professional community. Candidates must possess a national or international reputation for scholarly achievement, have a well-established research agenda as evidenced by their record of receiving externally funded grants, be an experienced educator, and have a demonstrated history of service to the community.

We seek an energetic, innovative, and talented faculty member to become part of our dynamic team. This Distinguished Professor is expected to provide leadership and impact on an ongoing basis, and in the broadest sense possible, throughout their term as a Distinguished Professor. Examples of this include, but are not limited to, executing a high impact research agenda, developing interdisciplinary research programs, recruitment and mentoring of new faculty members, and outreach to the broader community. Through these tasks, the Sandy and Deborah McNeill Distinguished Professorship of Nursing will build and enhance the School of Nursing's research and service agenda and reputation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Master's and doctoral degrees in nursing OR a doctorate in a related discipline with a baccalaureate OR a graduate degree in nursing at the time of application.
• In addition, the candidate will be required to meet the rank criteria for a tenured professor at UNCW.
• This individual should also have an established program of externally funded interdisciplinary nursing research that has advanced the nursing profession.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

• National visibility for their research that complements the UNCW School of Nursing's areas of research emphasis, including but not limited to rural health outcomes, healthy aging, health systems, chronic illness, health care quality and safety, simulation technology, education, and health promotion research across the life span.
• Experience with AI use in educational and professional settings

Required Certifications or Licensure:

• A current RN license in NC or eligibility for licensure in NC

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The School of Nursing (SON) within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has an outstanding legacy of serving the people of southeastern North Carolina through education, research, scholarship, and service. The SON is dedicated to excellence in the development of healthcare professionals through in-depth education, professional partnerships, applied research, regional engagement, and community outreach and impact. Nursing programs in the SON are CCNE accredited and the SON has been recognized by the National League of Nursing as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, specifically in the area of promoting the pedagogical expertise of faculty. The SON is located in McNeill Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that includes offices, classrooms, a large lecture hall, computer laboratories, student success areas and learning commons, and the Simulation Learning Center. The Simulation Learning Center uses high, medium, and low-fidelity human patient simulators as teaching and learning tools for nursing education. Through the use of simulation, we strive to create a realistic environment and a powerful learning experience that promotes the cognitive, affective, physical, and social development of the student as well as the incorporation of inter-professional collaborative experiences for students across the degree programs in the College.

  • MSN to DNP (Nurse Executive Leadership and Post-APRN concentrations)

Clinical Research

• MS in Clinical Research and Product Development

Over 2,400 students are enrolled in programs within the SON. The SON has over 85 full-time faculty and employs over 60 part-time faculty per semester.

College/School Information:

The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.
