Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Fairmont State University is seeking a dependable and motivated Trades Specialist I to join our Maintenance team. This position plays an important role in maintaining the safety, appearance, and functionality of campus facilities by assisting with a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.
Position Summary
The Trades Specialist I performs a variety of entry-level building and maintenance tasks to support the safe and efficient operation of campus facilities. Work involves assisting skilled trades staff and performing routine repairs, preventive maintenance, and general upkeep of university buildings, equipment, and grounds.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist skilled trades workers (e.g., electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters) with routine repairs and maintenance.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, tightening hardware, patching walls, and painting.
- Operate and care for hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment.
- Complete preventive maintenance checks as assigned.
- Report maintenance needs and safety hazards promptly.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, shops, and storage.
- Follow established safety practices and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the maintenance and facilities team.
Minimum Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
Valid driver's license
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn multiple trades through on-the-job training.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and customer service orientation.
- Dependability and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in building maintenance, construction, or related field.
- Familiarity with one or more trades (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC).
