Role Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified graduate to join the Human Anatomy Unit (HAU) at the University of Birmingham. This role is part of a wider team of dedicated support staff who support our specialist teaching facilities. These licenced facilities are currently located across several areas of the Medical School building and are used by a wide range of teaching programmes to train future healthcare professionals.

The HAU are looking to recruit an anatomy graduate to join our team as a trainee technician as part of an established team of dedicated staff to provide support for practical anatomy teaching.

As a trainee technician you will utilise your anatomical knowledge and will be supported by more experienced colleagues to develop an understanding of the requirements to deliver all our undergraduate practical classes. You will as part of our training also be supported to develop the skills necessary to receipt, prepare, embalm, and store the donors who bequeath their bodies to the HAU for Anatomical Examination. As part of your training, you will also be encouraged and supported to prepare high-quality prosected specimens for use in our licensed teaching facilities from all regions of the human body.

Person Specification

You will be supported as to obtain a Certificate in Anatomical Science and Technology. Upon obtaining these qualifications your training would be considered complete, and your position may be regraded. We would anticipate this training period lasting between 2 to 3 years. Beyond this there are a wide range of further development opportunities which you would be supported and encouraged to pursue – from undertaking further postgraduate qualifications to engaging with departmental scholarship to applying for Professional Registration with the Science Council to obtaining Associate Fellowship from Advance HE - the opportunities really will be driven by you and how you would like your career to develop.

The successful applicants will be committed to continually improving and developing the service and to provide an excellent experience for all users of the facility. This role will require you to engage as part of the team to develop the anatomical teaching support provision within a stimulating experiential learning environment. Applicants must be able to operate within a regulated environment and contribute to the statutory administrative record-keeping required by the Human Tissue Act (2004) and Health and Safety legislation. This post will involve heavy lifting that includes moving and handling whole donors and prepared donor material.
