Description
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for two full-time tenure-track positions in mathematics to begin in August 2027. For one of these positions, we seek a candidate whose scholarship is in algebra (broadly defined). The ideal candidate will show interest or have experience teaching Modern Algebra, Number Theory, and/or Combinatorics. The other position is open to candidates from any area of mathematics. One of these positions will be at the assistant professor level; the other may be at an assistant professor or associate professor level (without tenure).
In alignment with the strategic plans for Holy Cross and the division of Academic Affairs, we view academic excellence and inclusive excellence as inextricably linked. Our faculty combine high-impact scholarship and outstanding teaching with a deep commitment to inclusive excellence and we expect successful candidates to show a record of-or strong potential for-advancing inclusive excellence in the classroom through equitable, student-centered teaching practices that foster belonging, value diverse perspectives, and promote the success of all students. Candidates will be expected to teach at all levels of the curriculum and contribute to the instruction and development of courses. Tenure-track faculty at the College generate new knowledge in their field by establishing and maintaining an active program of scholarly research, and are expected to engage with students in and out of the classroom. In particular, we seek applicants who are interested in working with students on undergraduate research projects. As a liberal arts college, we value interdisciplinary engagement and welcome candidates eager to collaborate with faculty in other academic departments in both teaching and research. Academic freedom is a cornerstone of our intellectual and moral community; the College is committed to supporting faculty and students as they work to advance our educational mission and serve the common good.
Each of these positions carries a 3-2 teaching load, and Holy Cross offers generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track faculty receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2). Faculty who enter Holy Cross as an assistant professor and who claim less than three years of credit toward their tenure clock also have a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary. This leave is not available to faculty who enter as an untenured associate professor or who enter as an assistant professor and claim three years of credit toward their tenure clock.
Each of these positions offers full benefits. Starting salaries are $102,500 for an assistant professor with no prior tenure-track experience or one year of prior tenure-track experience at another institution; $106,500-$109,500 for an assistant professor with two or more years of prior tenure-track experience; and $112,000-$114,500 for faculty entering Holy Cross as untenured associate professors. Salary within the applicable range will be based on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. A PhD is required by the beginning of the appointment.
