University Assistant/Associate Professor in Materials Science
The Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy invite applications for a University Assistant/Associate Professorship position. The successful candidate will have an outstanding research record in a Materials Science related field and strong commitment to teaching. The post is available from 1 July 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department offers a world class research and teaching environment (www.msm.cam.ac.uk). The successful candidate will present a strong vision for a long-term research programme, building on the Departmental existing capabilities and taking advantage of the unique research environment in Cambridge to build collaborations and deliver new science and applications.
The successful applicant will strengthen and complement existing research fields in the Department.
Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant subject area and show evidence of being able to lead a successful research programme as well as evidence of research leadership (or potential to develop it) and the ability to attract research funding. They must show evidence of enthusiasm and ability to teach a wide range of courses in Materials Science successfully at undergraduate and masters levels.
The starting salary is dependent on the level of appointment being made. Assistant Professorships will start in the range of £47,389 - £59,966 per annum; Associate Professorships will start in the range of £63,606 - £67,468 per annum.

- a) Curriculum Vitae.
- b) A full list of publications to which a significant contribution has been made by the applicant. Please highlight up to 5 papers where you have made the most significant personal contributions, with up to 4 lines of text for each such paper.
- c) A 3-page research proposal, including a brief description, of not more than half a page, on how your research plans might fit with existing activities in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy and the wider University.
- d) A two-page statement on your approach to teaching and how you believe you can contribute to the Department's teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- e) The contact details of three referees.
- f) A one-page statement focusing on your contributions to and/or vision for improving research culture and community in the Department and the wider university.
