With a thorough understanding of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits, Veteran and Military Success Services (VMSS) at Santa Fe College (SF) offers a holistic approach to helping veterans and their families pursue their educational goals.
The Veteran and Military Success Services (VMSS) Specialist supports new and prospective veteran and military-affiliated students as they transition into college life at SF. This position provides information and guidance on military education benefits, options for converting military training into college credit, and assists with academic petitions, withdrawals and readmission related to active-duty mobilization. The Specialist also processes enrollment verifications and certifications for federal payments, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Additionally, this role provides information on GI Bill programs, disability support options, and other resources available to support student success.

Job Description

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Assists with enrollment verifications and certifications for veteran and military-affiliated students using VA Enrollment Manager, AI Portal and Tungsten, reconciling academic records with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and VA to ensure eligibility and continuation of education benefits.
  • Interprets and applies federal and state regulations governing DOD and VA educational programs to support student eligibility and compliance.
  • Processes changes in course and student statuses, including course additions, drops, withdrawals, or degree major changes, ensuring accurate reporting to federal agencies.
  • Assists in resolving delays or discrepancies in VA payments and tuition charges.
  • Conducts group presentations for new and prospective veteran and military-affiliated students on the GI Bill and other DOD-related programs to support informed enrollment decisions.
  • Prepares reports and responds to surveys regarding VMSS student enrollment and services, ensuring accurate, timely, and confidential submission of data.
  • Prepares and distributes monthly newsletters to communicate updates, events, and resources for VMSS students.
  • Assists in the development and upkeep of the department webpage including social media and web presence.
  • Supports college initiatives and assists in maintaining recognitions for veteran and military-friendly programs.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises VA work study students, coordinating their daily activities to support VMSS operations.
  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Strictly honors the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: An associate’s degree with two (2) years of related work experience or a combination of education and/or experience equal to four (4) years.

Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred: Working knowledge of the VA enrollment/certification system, as well as VA audit standards of educational programs. An understanding of PTSD, TBI, and VA healthcare issues.
