Veterinary Technician

To work with the veterinary clinical faculty, veterinary residents, and other licensed veterinary technicians to provide and help coordinate the medical care of research animals within the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM); to serve as a liaison between the veterinary clinicians and research laboratory personnel; and to maintain complete and accurate medical records. Technicians work independently so they can manage their own daily workload

Duties:

  • Assisting in the implementation and coordination of all ULAM veterinary medical care protocols concerning maintenance of animal health, as well as prevention and treatment of disease in laboratory animals. This often will involve communication with scientists and staff within the University of Michigan research laboratories.
  • Providing direct assistance to the veterinary clinical faculty and veterinary residents in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Maintaining animal records to ensure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines
  • Attending and actively participating in team meetings and other departmental committees. Training laboratory personnel in proper animal handling and restraint, as well as various medical techniques
  • Working equally with other licensed veterinary technician team members to provide consistent care for all animals on weekends and holidays

Opportunity for collaborating with clinical veterinarians on projects and publications

  • Associate's degree in animal health technology.
  • 1-3 years of experience
  • Must have an active Veterinary Technical license in the United States, have passed the VTNE exam, and be licensed in Michigan within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to work independently as needed while still working courteously and effectively with others.
  • Ability and willingness to work with many species, including but not limited to mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, cattle, and nonhuman primates.
  • Significant experience related to animal handling, methods of blood collection and drug administration, radiology, and anesthesiology.
  • Basic computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, and e-mails).

When fully trained, work hours are from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM Monday through Friday. The ability to move to an earlier work schedule occurs with seniority. Expectation for covering weekend and holiday duties is a shared responsibility amongst team members.
