Vice Chair for Education
The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University seeks a board-certified anesthesiologist to join the Department as Vice Chair for Education with an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor in the Clinician Educator Line.
The major criterion for appointment as Clinician Educators is excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, teaching, administrative and/or scholarship appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.
The primary responsibility of the Vice Chair for Education is to oversee the multiple interrelated components of the educational mission of the Department. This oversight includes all programs across the spectrum of educational settings, such as:
- Public/community
- College
- Undergraduate medical education
- Graduate medical education: ACGME residency and fellowships, non-ACGME programs, and postdoctoral fellows
- Continued professional education such as CME
The Vice Chair for Education reports to the Department Chair and works closely with other vice chairs, division chiefs, training program directors, and other stakeholders to advocate for our:
- Mission: Improve health care and patient outcomes by assessing and enhancing the quality of education in all our programs (community, college, medical school, residency, fellowships, and continuing education)
- Vision: Be internationally recognized as having premier, innovative, and learner-centered education programs that train the next generation of leaders in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
The successful candidate must have an MD degree (or equivalent) and be a board-certified (or equivalent) anesthesiologist who is eligible for a California license or exemption.
Specific responsibilities for the Vice-chair for Education will include the following:
- Serve as the chief departmental advocate for education, articulating a clear vision for educational innovation and excellence that aligns with departmental and institutional goals.
- Provide oversight of all educational programs, supporting continuous improvement and outcome metrics.
- Drive long-term planning efforts and create systems for sustainable innovation across educational programs.
- Provide mentorship, sponsorship, and career development to all program directors, associate program directors, education directors, education leaders, and emerging leaders.
- Create and nurture an educational research community, inspiring faculty and trainees to produce scholarly work that raises the national profile of Stanford Anesthesiology.

The expected base pay range for this position is: Clinical Associate Professor: $455,000–$465,000; Clinical Professor: $478,000–$499,000. This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
