The Vice Dean for Medical Education has the necessary authority to articulate and implement a strategic vision for medical education and to ensure strategic alignment, accountability, collaboration, and effective use of resources across the medical education mission. The Vice Dean serves as a key member of the Dean’s leadership team and represents the medical education mission in institutional planning, decision-making, resource allocation, and other strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead, develop, communicate, and oversee the execution of a strategic vision, plan, and goals for medical education, organizational management and accountability, accreditation[SM2.1][MS2.2][MS2.3] and compliance, and educational innovation, in alignment with the UC Davis Health and UC Davis School of Medicine strategic plans. Articulate the goals and advocate on behalf of medical education.
• Provide executive leadership and oversight across the medical education mission, including the MD program, Research Pathways, Community Health Scholars, Global Health, Graduate Medical Education, and the Body Donor Program.
• Oversee and support the senior academic and administrative leaders responsible for medical education programs, establishing clear expectations, accountability, coordination, and alignment across the education mission.
• Serve as the institutional authority on education quality and regulatory compliance, responsible for maintaining full, unencumbered LCME accreditation through a process of continuous quality improvement and compliance across the undergraduate education mission, and ACGME accreditation across the graduate medical education mission.
• Ensure the development, delivery, and continuous evaluation of an innovative and distinguished medical education program that enables learners
  to achieve appropriate competencies, with an emphasis on clinical reasoning, critical thinking, professionalism, and preparation for clinical practice.
• Oversee the Graduate Medical Education programs and their accreditation, including all UC Davis Health residency training programs and fellowships. The GME Office and the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/Designated Institutional Official dually report to the Vice Dean for Medical Education and UC Davis Health, and the GME Office resides within the Office of Medical Education.
• Communicate and collaborate with counterparts within the UC system, key constituents at UC Davis Health, and other external constituencies to further develop and advance medical education programs and activities.
• Establish creative and trusting partnerships with the various committees, chairs, faculty, staff, students, key clinical affiliates, and other constituents to advance shared educational goals and strengthen the medical education mission.
• Work with the Committee on Educational Policy and faculty leadership to ensure effective curriculum oversight, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement, as well as the adequacy of faculty and educational resources across instructional sites.
• Work with the Committee on Student Promotions and faculty leadership to ensure effective and equitable student assessment and advancement through the medical education program.
• Work with the Admissions Committee and faculty leadership to implement effective policies and procedures that fulfill the strategic vision and mission for the medical education program.
• Ensure institutional compliance with applicable educational accreditation and regulatory requirements, including requirements of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and other accrediting bodies relevant to programs within the medical education mission.
• Develop and advance scholarship in medical education and foster innovation in teaching, assessment, curriculum development, and mentorship for faculty.
• Collaborate with HEAL (Health Sciences Educators’ Academy for Learning), Academic Personnel, and departments to ensure excellence in faculty development in education.
• Work closely with senior academic and administrative leaders to ensure appropriate alignment of financial, staffing, space, and other resources with the priorities of the medical education mission.
• Partner with the education deans and constituents to optimize the affiliated student-run clinics.
• Work with key constituents to integrate health and wellness activities for all medical students, residents, and trainees.
• Work with key constituents to integrate quality improvement and patient safety in education activities.
• Recruit, appoint, manage, compensate, mentor, and retain associate deans, staff direct reports, and other program leaders.
• Plan and manage space for medical education and ensure that all space is used efficiently and productively.
• Demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence through the allocation of resources, recruitment decisions, and communication of priorities and initiatives.
• Represent and advocate for the medical education mission within the School of Medicine, UC Davis Health, University of California Davis, the UC System, and appropriate external organizations and constituencies.

The Vice Dean for Medical Education must hold an appointment at the Full Professor level in the Regular (Ladder-Rank), In Residence, or Clinical X series, with faculty responsibilities in clinical, research, and/or teaching duties in an appropriate academic department.

As an Academic Senate faculty member, responsibilities include clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable; teaching medical students and post-graduate trainees; conducting bench/clinical/translational research leading to peer-reviewed publication; and University service.
