Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies Program at Swarthmore College invites applications for a two-year, full-time visiting appointment at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2026. We welcome applications from scholars who specialize in any dimension of Environmental Policy. The candidate might have training in fields that include (but are not limited to) environmental studies, economics, political science, public policy, planning, sociology, anthropology, Indigenous studies, environmental law and policy, public health, and science and technology studies. We seek candidates committed to excellence in both undergraduate teaching and scholarly research and who contribute to diverse and inclusive communities. Successful candidates will be prepared to teach courses in their areas of expertise and in our core Environmental Studies courses, including Introduction to Environmental Studies, and advise students in the environmental studies major. Visiting faculty teach the same 2-2 course load as tenure-track faculty, are provided mentoring and professional development opportunities, and are eligible for funds to support research and conference travel. The salary is highly competitive.

Applicants should have either completed a Ph.D (or the equivalent) in a related field or be close to finishing a Ph.D. (?all but dissertation? or ABD).
The strongest candidates will demonstrate an active research program and a commitment to creative teaching that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.
Applicants should include a brief cover letter describing their interest in Swarthmore College, a curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and three letters of recommendation. The teaching statement should describe the applicant’s interests in teaching at an undergraduate institution, previous teaching experience, and approach to teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. At least one letter of recommendation should comment specifically on teaching.
