Visiting Assistant Professor of Industrial Design

Position Overview

This is a one year, visiting faculty position at the academic rank of Assistant Professor in the Art Department. Primary responsibilities are teaching in the Industrial Design program with a full time course load which, given load calculations, equates to 5 courses per year. Ideal candidates will have experience and success teaching Industrial Design at the undergraduate college level. Candidates are expected to have their MFA at the time of appointment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Teach a full-time faculty load
  • Provide high quality instruction in all courses, identifying and developing creative, challenging, and evidence-based learning opportunities for students including inclusive and student centered pedagogies
  • Mentor undergraduate students, particularly in areas of student research, experiential learning
  • Be an exemplary professional role model for students inside and outside of the classroom and as a colleague, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and collaboration.
  • Assess student learning in all classes and implement changes to demonstrate continuous improvement and student mastery of course learning outcomes
  • Work in a professional and team-oriented manner with faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Maintain compliance with the academic calendar, the weekly schedules, with policies and procedures in the Faculty Handbook, the Employee Handbook and the student Honor Code.

Qualifications

Education and Credentialing (Required)

  • Master’s of Fine Arts in Industrial Design (MFA)
  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in the principles, practices, and methods of Industrial Design
  • Credentials consistent with appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor

Experience and Knowledge (Preferred)

  • Knowledge and experience sufficient to enable the candidate to effectively teach courses as assigned in Industrial Design, preferential consideration may be given to candidates with prior college teaching experience
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary education

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with relevant 3D modeling softwares and additive and subtractive tools
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deliver course content and to assist students in understanding course knowledge and develop essential skills
  • Ability to evaluate student work and to provide effective feedback, including the ability to deliver course content at the appropriate level
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving teaching modalities and learning environments
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with faculty colleagues and contribute to a student-centered academic culture
  • Proven ability to prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and respond to students in a timely and professional manner
  • Proficiency in English and in essential digital tools (e.g., word processing, Google tools, email, and Canvas, the institutional LMS)
  • Commitment to fostering an environment where all belong and are welcomed.

Teaching Responsibilities

As part of the full time load, teaching responsibilities may include: Teaching introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in Industrial Design.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position. Most classes, meetings and office hours are scheduled during the typical workday; however there may be some evenings and weekends.
