Job Description

The Athens campus of Ohio University and its five regional campuses are geographically located within the 32 Ohio counties identified by the 1965 Appalachian Regional Development Act as Appalachia. Rich in regional culture and the arts, Appalachia continues to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation towards an envisioned future of promise and opportunity. Because of our location, the University is uniquely situated to support Appalachia through teaching, research, and service and holds this fact central to its mission.

Distinguished philanthropists Jeffrey D. Chaddock (BSC '88) and Mark A. Morrow have committed a $25 million gift that is positioned to advance Ohio University's College of Fine Arts, supporting its mission of fostering creativity and education. This commitment aims to enhance programs and facilities, enriching the experience for students, faculty, and the broader Appalachian community.

School of Music

The School of Music at Ohio University is one of the six schools within the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts and plays a significant role in the vibrant cultural life of Ohio University as well as Southeast Ohio. School of Music students, faculty, and guest artists present over 200 concerts and recitals each year. A distinguished faculty of 42 full time and 19 part time professors serve a student body of approximately 300 undergraduate and 75 master's students. Degree programs include composition, conducting, CMDI, music education, music history and literature, music performance, performance/pedagogy, music theory, and music therapy. School of Music alumni hold prominent teaching and professional positions throughout the United States and abroad. The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1946 and is committed to continuing its tradition of excellence. The School of Music also administers a regionally impactful community music school, Athens Community Music School (ACMS), through which many music majors obtain practical teaching experience.

The School of Music at Ohio University invites applicants for a one-year appointment in Musicology at the level of Visiting Professor, beginning date August 16, 2026. This position may be renewable up to three years. The focus is on teaching and the appointee is not required to carry out scholarly/creative activity.

The successful candidate will teach courses in music history and may include: Introduction to Music History and Literature, History and Literature of Music I and II, graduate seminars in music history, and possibly a course in the General Education curriculum. Exact teaching assignments will be made by the Director of the School of Music based on the needs of the school.
