Description

The University of Houston (UH) is seeking strong applicants for a nine-month, non-tenure track, Visiting Scholar position in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COMD). Qualifications include: earned Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders or related field (ABD will be considered), potential for a strong record of research and scholarship, and teaching experience. CCCs preferred. The initial appointment will be for one calendar year, with the possibility of renewal for a second. Position is starting in Fall 2026 with the potential to begin in summer 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Research – conduct research within candidate’s area of focus
    • Can be independent and/or embedded in an active research lab in UHCOMD
    • Active lab groups include:
      • Margaret Blake - Right hemisphere stroke & apragmatism
      • Ferenc Bunta – Bilingual and cross-linguistic phonology lab
      • Heather Dial – Speech, Language, Aphasia, and the Brain Lab
      • Ashwini Joshi – The Joshi Voice Lab: Clinical voice assessment and treatment
      • Monique Mills – Child Language Ability Lab, dialect variation, narrative assessment
      • Amber Thiessen – visual processing and language comprehension in aphasia; visual processing in autism
      • Austin Thompson – Speech Perception, Acoustics, and Kinematics (SPEAK) Lab, studying dysarthria in Parkinson’s disease and natural speech variation in healthy speakers.
    • Research should lead to concrete outcomes such as a submitted/published manuscript or submitted grant proposal.
    • Present at the COMD research seminar once during each year of the position
  • Teaching – teach 2 course sections each long semester
    • Possible courses (depending on candidate’s area(s) of focus): Intro to COMD, Language Development, Language Disorders, Phonetics, Anatomy & Physiology, Neuroscience, Clinical Procedures, Clinic (clinical educator role), Dysphagia (graduate level), Research & Critical Thinking (graduate level)

About COMD

Ranked 39th in the nation by US News and World Report, COMD is committed to excellence in research, education, and service. COMD is well positioned in UH’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), the largest college on campus. The department is home to approximately 20 tenure and non-tenure track faculty, numerous clinical educators, and dedicated staff. At the undergraduate level, we have around 350 majors. In addition to BA/BS degrees in communication sciences & disorders, we offer a post-baccalaureate leveling program in speech-language pathology and a BA in Interpreting and Translation American Sign Language (ASL)/English. At the graduate level we typically have 70 students in our accredited MA program in speech language pathology and 10 in our Ph.D. program. Our newly renovated building is specifically designed to support our mission, and our on-campus clinic provides essential services to the greater Houston area, addressing a wide range of disorders across various backgrounds, ages, and etiologies.

Qualifications

  • Required: PhD (or ABD, if completed by Fall 2026 start date) in Communication Sciences & Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology, or related field.
  • Preferred: Clinical certification (CCC-SLP) and eligibility for state licensure.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated teaching experience and/or research productivity.

Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.

Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.
