General Summary

The Vocational Nursing Clinical Faculty member is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction with a primary emphasis on clinical education and supervision of students in healthcare settings. This includes direct oversight of students during clinical experiences in a variety of settings, including hospitals and community agencies, as well as demonstration and reinforcement of nursing skills and clinical reasoning in simulation and laboratory environments.

This position plays an essential role in supporting student success by creating an engaging and effective learning environment that promotes the development of clinical competence, sound clinical judgment, critical thinking, and professional behavior. The instructor is responsible for teaching, modeling, and evaluating clinical judgment in real-time patient care situations, ensuring students are able to safely apply theoretical knowledge in practice.

The Clinical Faculty member ensures that all instructional and clinical activities align with program objectives, accreditation standards, and state regulatory requirements, as well as the policies and expectations outlined in the nursing program handbook. This role requires consistent enforcement of clinical standards, professional conduct, and safe patient care practices.

Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate and up-to-date clinical and course records; advising, tutoring, and counseling students to support their academic and clinical progression; and actively participating in student recruitment and selection. The instructor also collaborates with the program director in ongoing program evaluation and curriculum revision to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with current healthcare practices.

Specific Position Duties
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the teaching field and current clinical practice standards.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and reasonably requested by the college with a primary assignments being focused on clinical instruction and supervision.
  • Provides direct clinical supervision of students, ensuring safe, competent, and professional patient care in accordance with program standards.
  • Teaches, evaluates, and reinforces clinical judgment, prioritization, and decision-making skills in both simulation and live clinical settings.
  • Ensures strict adherence to all policies and expectations outlined in the nursing program handbook, including clinical performance, attendance, professionalism, and safety standards.
  • Utilizes appropriately challenging coursework and clinical experiences to help students realize their full potential as learners and practitioners.
  • Provides students with written expectations (e.g., syllabi, clinical guidelines, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations).
  • Administers tests appropriate to course content, including evaluation of clinical performance and competency achievement.
  • Uses various instructional methods to affirm the worth and dignity of all persons and the right of all persons to learn.
  • Maintains an appropriate learning and assessment environment in the classroom, simulation lab, and clinical setting, encouraging the free exchange of ideas while upholding academic honesty and objectivity.
  • Prepares adequately for and arrives promptly to all clinical assignments, labs, and scheduled instructional activities.
  • Delivers material in a clear and understandable manner and provides real-time coaching and feedback in clinical environments.
  • Addresses student concerns (e.g., comments, questions, input) both in clinical settings and through office hours, timely electronic communication, and other appropriate means.
  • Effectively handles routine procedures necessary for the successful day-to-day operation of the department, including clinical coordination responsibilities as assigned.
  • Submits required reports, including clinical evaluations, attendance, and compliance documentation, in a timely manner.
  • Maintains effective relationships with clinical partners, professional counterparts, and community stakeholders.
  • Provides individual student advisement on degree plans, clinical progression, and applications to ensure compliance with completion requirements.
  • Assists with recruiting, marketing, and outreach for department programs.
  • Actively participates in college functions, program meetings, and community service.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Holds a current license or privilege to practice as a vocational or registered nurse in the State of Texas.
  • Has been actively employed in nursing for at least two of the past three years, with recent clinical experience strongly preferred. If not actively employed during that period, prior nursing experience will be considered.
  • Possesses advanced preparation in nursing, nursing education, or nursing administration, which will be taken into consideration for the position.
