Peer Mentors at Auburn University at Montgomery are undergraduate and graduate students who help guide and encourage fellow AUM students. They are class leaders who act as a support system by helping students understand course material and class expectations. The role of a peer mentor can be compared to that of a teaching assistant without the responsibility of grading assignments. Additionally, peer mentors receive priority registration for the semester for which they mentor.

Applicants selected to be a peer mentor will be assigned to work with academic departments and will be expected to work with students in a course approved by that department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Uphold AUM’s mission and build community within the classroom.
  • Offer student perspectives in discussions and encourage reflection.
  • Lead engaging activities like group work, guest speakers, and study sessions.
  • Help students with assignments and academic success.
  • Attend all assigned classes and meet with the professor weekly.
  • Hold weekly office hours in the Library Tower (or virtually for online courses).
  • Coordinate and attend AUM events with students.
  • Connect students with campus resources and services.
  • Model appropriate behavior and maintain confidentiality ( FERPA, Title IX).
  • Keep communication open with professors and complete interaction logs.
  • Clock in/out and report any time discrepancies to the department.
  • Complete assessments or surveys as needed.
  • Complete training and attend all scheduled meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Dedicated to helping others succeed
  • Confident in your ability to lead
  • Able to speak in front of a classroom of students
  • Comfortable leading group discussions
  • Ability to provide explanations of course subject matter

Qualifications and Requirements:

Time Commitment:

  • Time commitment for fall and spring semesters
  • Five hours per week per course for 15 weeks (75 hours)
  • Six hours of training and workshops (four hours pre- semester and two hours during the semester in which you are employed).
  • Mentors may be asked to participate in various EEEC activities during the summer semester, such as Orientations, Welcome Weeks, Mentor/Mentee Meet & Greets, etc.
  • Mentors are paired with a professor and class based on their experience, schedule, and availability.
