Modern discourse
RIP. This could have been avoided, whatever one’s personal opinions about recruitment at Cambridge and the level of intense scrutiny around the deceased, which, although expected due to the pressure of the role, cannot and must not lead to situations where somebody takes their own life.
Professor Jason Arday did not claim to speak for every black professor, sociologist, or researcher when listing his reputed academic, sporting, or charitable achievements, in the same way that allegations of racial harassment await investigations by his former employer and the appropriate authorities, but the fact that a man is dead needs to be more important than rants about hiring academics of colour or attempts to discredit the humanities.
We can do better.
