Dipankar Chakravarti is Eminent Scholar and Professor of Marketing and the Robert H. Digges Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business. He holds a B.Sc. with Honors in Physics from Presidency College, University of Calcutta (1969), and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University (1976 and 1979). Previously, he served as Professor of Marketing and Vice-Dean (Programs) at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School (2009-2015), where he led the design and launch of the full-time Global MBA Program and directed the Innovation for Humanity course; The Ortloff Professor of Business and Interim Dean at University of Colorado Boulder's Leeds School of Business (1995-2009); Professor of Marketing and Psychology, Thomas Faculty Fellow, and Head of the Marketing Department at University of Arizona's Eller School (1986-1995); and Associate and Assistant Professor of Marketing at University of Florida (1978-1986). He is Professor Emeritus at CU-Boulder and was the founding director of Virginia Tech's Ph.D. program in Executive Business Research (2015-2022). Earlier in his career, he held marketing planning and control roles at DCM, India (1969-1974).
Dr. Chakravarti's research specializes in managerial and consumer decision making, with extensive publications in premier journals including Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Marketing Science, Management Science, and Annual Review of Psychology. His 1991 Journal of Consumer Research paper received the ACR/JCR award for the best article published between 1991 and 1993. He is a lifetime Fellow of the Society for Consumer Psychology, served as Editor of Journal of Consumer Psychology (1993-1996) and on editorial boards of Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Marketing. Major honors include Outstanding Faculty in Doctoral Education from Pamplin College of Business (2018), multiple invitations as faculty to American Marketing Association-Sheth Doctoral Consortiums (1985-2016), Green Blue Jay Award for Innovation for Humanity course (2013), and Global Marketing and Retailing Fellow at SMU Cox School (2025). He has mentored over 50 doctoral students, consulted for IBM, P&G, HP, FTC, and UNDP, and held leadership positions such as President of Society for Consumer Psychology (2003-2004) and Director (Academic) of Association for Consumer Research (1994-1997).
