About Garner

Garner Clancey is an Associate Professor in Criminology at the University of Sydney Law School, joining the institution in 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie University, a Master of Criminology with Honours, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney, with his doctoral thesis focusing on local crime prevention partnerships. Prior to his academic career, Clancey worked in criminal justice agencies from 1992 to 2002, including positions with the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice, NSW Police Force, and alcohol and other drugs organizations in New South Wales and England. Between 2002 and 2010, he operated as a crime prevention consultant, authoring reports for the NSW Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Children Young People and the Built Environment, NSW Police Force, NSW Crime Prevention Division, Sydney Institute of Criminology, Australian Institute of Criminology, and local councils. His consultancy work also encompassed coordinating community safety audits, developing local government crime prevention plans, delivering training to security personnel, police, and community groups, and creating resources such as the manual 'Considerations for Establishing a Public Space CCTV System' for the Australian Institute of Criminology.

Clancey's research specializations encompass crime prevention with an emphasis on local strategies, youth offending, and youth justice systems. As Director of the University of Sydney Justice Collaboration, he leads interdisciplinary efforts to improve justice systems, including criminal justice and rehabilitation initiatives. He previously served as Deputy Director of the Sydney Institute of Criminology and as National Vice President of the Australian Crime Prevention Council. Key publications include the book 'Careers in Criminology and Criminal Justice in Australia' (2026), 'Inspections, reviews, inquiries and recommendations pertaining to youth justice centres in New South Wales between 2015 and 2021' (2022, Current Issues in Criminal Justice), 'Youth justice in Australia: Themes from recent inquiries' (2020, Australian Institute of Criminology), 'A local case study of the crime decline' (2015, Safer Communities), and 'What Police Say about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design' (2021, Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice). Clancey has obtained funding from the Australian Institute of Criminology for collaborative projects and received recognition in 2024 for the Youth Justice Collaboration. He has taught criminology and crime prevention courses at six Australian universities and contributed to numerous conferences and public engagements.
