Professor Zhizhong Zhang is a professor in the Department of Translation at the School of Foreign Languages, Nankai University, where he has served since 2019. He also holds an adjunct professorship at the Institute of Cross Culture and World Literature, Tianjin Normal University. Zhang earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Zhengzhou University (1985–1989), a Master of Arts in British and American Literature from Tianjin Foreign Studies University (1993–1996), and a Doctorate in Classical Translation and Translation Theory from the School of Foreign Languages at Nankai University (2002–2005). His professional career encompasses teaching at No. 5 Middle School in Boai County, Henan Province (1989–1993); translation roles at Shenzhen Xianke Entertainment Communication Co., Ltd. and Huawei Technology Co., Ltd. (1996–2000); lectureships at Tianjin University of Science and Technology (2000–2005) and Zhongyuan Institute of Technology, where he was Vice President of the School of Foreign Languages (2005–2010); postdoctoral research in poetry translation aesthetics at Henan University (2007–2010); and Directorship of the Institute of Translation at the School of Foreign Languages, Tianjin Normal University (2010–2019). Additionally, he was a visiting professor at Heidelberg University (2014–2015).
Zhang specializes in the English translation of Chinese poetry, with emphasis on classics and poetry translation aesthetics. He has directed key projects including 'Research on Aesthetics of Chinese Poetry English Translation,' a National Social Science Foundation project (2013–2014), and 'Research on the Genre of Chinese Poetry English Translation Style,' a Tianjin Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning key project (2015–2018). His scholarly output features monographs such as Xu Yuanchong and the Art of Translation (Hubei Education Press, 2006), Comparative Study on English Translation of Mao Zedong's Poems (China Social Sciences Press, 2008), and Aesthetic Studies of Han Poetry English Translation (Commercial Press, 2015); over 90 translated works, notably 800 English Translations of Tang Poetry Quatrains: A Comparison Between Chinese and English (Wuhan University Press, 2019) and Three Hundred Tang Poems (in Chinese and English) (Global Culture Press, 2016); and more than 100 academic papers. Zhang serves as Director and English Secretary General of the World Sinology and Literature China Research Association, Director of the Professional Committee on English Translation of Classics of China Association for Comparative Studies Between English and Chinese, Director of Tianjin Society of Comparative Literature, and holds various editorial roles including Guest Editor in Chief of World Poet Quarterly and English Editor in Chief of World Sinology. His honors include the third prize of the 15th Tianjin Social Science Excellent Achievement Award (2018), selection into Tianjin's discipline leading talent training plan (2017) and high-level talents project (2013), and the Translation Award of China Contemporary Poetry Award (2011).
