3 PhD Candidates in Generative AI for Industrial Design Engineering (GenAIDE) Project
The Faculty of Science and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are looking for 3 PhD Candidates in Generative AI for Industrial Design Engineering (GenAIDE) Project. Generative AI and large-language models (LLMs) are about to turn computer-aided engineering into true human–AI co-design. In the new MSCA Doctoral Network GenAIDE, we team up with Honda Research Institute Europe, Altair, MIT and 12 other partners to build an AI Partner in Engineering (AIPE) that converses with engineers, proposes designs, explains its reasoning and even writes new optimisation algorithms to optimize the designs.
Three PhD candidates will be based at LIACS (Leiden University) and spend several months with industry and academic partners abroad. GenAIDE is a 48-month MSCA Industrial Doctorate that aims to turn today’s computer-aided engineering tools into proactive team-mates. The network of 16 academic and industrial partners will train 14 PhD fellows.
What GenAIDE offers: A structured, four-year PhD training programme including personalised PhD training paths, international secondments (3–6 months) with partners like Altair and MIT, network-wide events such as summer schools, dedicated supervision, ECTS-accredited courses, travel funding and peer exchange.
The three positions are:
- Enhancing Search Parameter–Output Relationships of Generative Shape Optimisation: Focuses on embedding LLMs into generative shape-optimisation algorithms for more expressive design-variable encodings.
- Explainable AI with LLMs for Transparent Decision-Making in Design Engineering: Combines XAI methods with LLMs for human-readable explanations in human–AI design sessions.
- Automated Algorithm Design using Large Language Models: Applies LLMs to synthesise or fine-tune optimisation algorithms based on task descriptions.
Key responsibilities: Assist in teaching activities, perform PhD research, publish in top venues, collaborate with fellows and partners, complete secondments and contribute to the NACO research cluster.
Selection criteria: MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering or related field; background in machine learning and/or evolutionary optimisation; strong programming skills; interest in generative models, XAI, optimisation or CAD; excellent English; willingness to work internationally; MSCA eligibility criteria.
Research at the faculty: The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty focused on fundamental knowledge and societal challenges, with diverse research institutes.
Terms and conditions: Full-time 1-year term position, extendable to four years upon positive evaluation. Salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month.
