Academic Advising Manager- Transfer Student Success Center, Division of Student Affairs
Position Details
Hunter College seeks a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as the inaugural Manager of the Transfer Student Success Center (TSSC). Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs/Academic Support, this individual will manage a new campus-wide center dedicated to the recruitment, onboarding, and retention of transfer students, particularly through their first year.
The Manager will support the center’s infrastructure, oversee a team of cross-trained staff, and promote transfer student advocacy and engagement. The ideal candidate will bring a student-centered mindset, knowledge of transfer pathways (particularly CUNY and non-CUNY pipelines), and a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Academic Advising Manager will be responsible for the following duties:
- Support the development of programs and operational processes tailored to transfer students from both CUNY and non-CUNY institutions, addressing their unique needs and transitions
- Oversee high-impact programs such as peer mentorship, welcome events, and transition workshops
- Manage and provide personalized, one-on-one advising to a caseload of transfer students, helping them understand degree requirements, transfer credit evaluations, and academic planning
- Train and supervise Transfer Success Center Academic Advisors and other support staff
- Promote a culture of proactive, holistic advising and high-quality student service
- Ensure seamless collaboration with leadership and various team members of Financial Aid, Advising, Registrar, Admissions, Career Center, and other key offices
- Oversee advising protocols and ensure staff are equipped to support students with transfer credit evaluation, financial aid navigation, academic planning, and career related advice
- Create programming for CUNY vs. non-CUNY transfers, and adult learners, including orientation models, credit advocacy, and degree planning
- Serve as the primary liaison to academic departments, admissions, and faculty advisors to align services and support in training academic department advisors on the transfer initiative process
- Represent the Center in campus-wide student success committees and transfer initiatives
- In collaboration with the admissions office, work with external partners, including community colleges, to build transfer pipelines and support pre-admission engagement
- Alongside leadership, continually assess ongoing advising programs using direct and indirect, quantitative and qualitative methods
- Maintain center metrics and prepare reports on transfer student outcomes and Center performance
- Stay current with national best practices and recommend innovations to improve transfer student success
- Manager is expected to have staff photo and biography on website, and engage in virtual advising, chat rooms, social media, videos, and online tutorials
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Position may occasionally require evening and/or weekend work
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, public administration, or a related field
- Familiarity with higher ed technology solutions such as CRM, Student Information Systems, and Retention tools
- Familiarity with CUNY
- Knowledge of New York State and federal financial aid policies
- Experience launching or scaling new student success initiatives
- Experience working directly with transfer students or in transfer admissions/articulation
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing student-facing operations
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in serving historically underserved student populations
CUNY Title Overview
Manages the development and operations of academic counseling services.
- Develops and coordinates campus efforts to provide a comprehensive academic advisement model and protocol; assists with strategic planning
- Supervises an academic advisement center; oversees counseling activities to provide consistently reliable information to students
- Works with academic departments to develop faculty advisement components
- Collaborates with other campus offices to provide smooth and coordinated access to academic counseling services in order to enhance student performance and retention
- Develops workshops and other training to utilize advising technologies
- Oversees the development of advisement brochures and sample study programs
- Assesses academic counseling activities by tracking student progress and evaluating advisement system; recommends enhancements
- Organizes and facilitates ongoing training on use of advising technologies
- May manage professional and clerical staff; may monitor unit budget
- Performs related duties as assigned
Compensation and Benefits
