Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is hiring an Academic Advisor to support master’s-level graduate and professional students. This role works as part of a collaborative team that supports both online and in person students across all programs. The position will be primarily based at the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD, with some local travel between campuses required.

The Academic Advisor works closely with a caseload of students, graduate and/or undergraduate, and assists them holistically with academic planning, course registration, academic strategies, selecting majors, concentrations, and minors, and developing post-graduation plans. This role troubleshoots academic problems, monitors academic progress and academic standing, and advises on policies and procedures.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising

  • Help students navigate their academic experience by assisting with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and connections to academic resources.
  • Work with students holistically to help them meet their personal and academic goals and to help find solutions for personal, social, financial, and academic probations.
  • Assist students with course registration, academic strategies, selecting majors and minors, and developing post-graduation plans.
  • Track student progress by generating reports, examining student data, and connecting with students about registration, grades, and graduation to support their success and retention. View and manage early warning flags by providing outreach to students and communicating with faculty.
  • Troubleshoot problems with registration and refer students to support services to facilitate success.
  • Advise students on academic opportunities and requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide early interventions, identifying and communicating with 'high priority' students identified by faculty in each academic term.
  • May meet with students on academic probation and those whose suspension has been reinstated to conduct a self-assessment and academic success plan.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress to advise them of their academic standing.
  • Communicate to students the process and deadlines for graduation processing.
  • Create and maintain accurate academic records through degree audit software and SIS, document student meetings and notes in the student information database.

Programming, Projects, & Collaboration

  • Conduct group advising sessions, advising workshops, and/or co-sponsor events with faculty and other support offices.
  • Work closely with key campus partners (Registrar, Life Design, Financial Aid, Student Life, Residential Life) to ensure that this role functions effectively in connecting advisees to campus resources.
  • Participate in Advising and campus-wide working groups and committees.
  • Work on projects to continually improve the service of academic advising and the training and development of academic advisors.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Occasional nights and weekends to support student facing events may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Three years experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, or related area of study.
  • Previous experience working with international students.
  • Previous experience working with online student populations.
  • Knowledge of graduate student development

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/MD
Starting Salary Range: $55,800 - $76,700 - $97,600 Annually (Commensurate w/exp.)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm with occasional nights and weekends
FLSA Status: Exempt
