Salary Range: $61,000 - $67,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Academic Technologist advances the strategic adoption and use of academic technologies by contributing to the discovery, exploration, evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of instructional technologies and learning environments. Partners with students, faculty, leadership, and staff to enhance teaching and learning through data-informed practices, training development, and operational support. This position requires both technical proficiency and an applied understanding of pedagogy and instructional design to guide the effective integration of academic technologies across learning environments. This role is responsible for managing campus-wide academic technology initiatives through the analysis, exploration, review, implementation, and evaluation of instructional technologies. Applies instructional design principles, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and data-informed practices to promote meaningful integration of technology in online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning environments. Leads assigned projects, coordinates operational processes, and develops strategies and resources that enable effective adoption and use of academic technologies across the university.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Leads the review of new digital tool proposals submitted through the Innovation Gateway by analyzing features, benchmarking against peer institutions, and preparing summary reports. Apply UT San Antonio's evaluation framework, which considers instructional design principles, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), pedagogical alignment and related criteria, to ensure tools support meaningful teaching and learning outcomes.
  2. Conducts in-depth research on emerging educational technologies to inform tool evaluation, roadmap planning, and alignment with institutional teaching and learning priorities.
  3. Coordinates and implements academic technology initiatives across instructional modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online), including installation, vendor communication, scheduling, stakeholder logistics, troubleshooting, and collecting feedback.
  4. Leads or contributes to projects that support the strategic use of academic technologies within colleges and departments, including initiatives related to the Learning Management System (LMS) and other enterprise tools.
  5. Develops, maintains, and refines training materials and resources across course modalities for students, faculty, and staff. This includes user guides, how-to documentation, and communications that support adoption and effective tool usage.
  6. Manages assigned service requests and collaborate with team members as necessary to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  7. Completes operational tasks across digital tools, including content updates, onboarding setup, and workflow coordination.
  8. Leads effectiveness reviews, usage analyses, and satisfaction surveys by interpreting data, identifying trends, and formulating recommendations that inform continuous service improvement.
  9. Stays current on trends in instructional technology, instructional design, accessibility standards, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL); and make recommendations that enhance digital learning practices and improve the teaching and learning experience.
  10. Presents findings, research, or project updates to leadership and university administration as needed.
  11. Facilitates training sessions for faculty to advance the effective use of academic technologies in support of curriculum goals and instructional design best practices.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Technology, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience supporting faculty in the use of technology for teaching and learning, including consulting, developing training materials, or promoting pedagogical innovation.
  • At the department's discretion, experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Technology, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with best practicies in using educational technologies in higher education, including Learning Management Systems (Canvas, Blackboard, D2L Brightspace), and others.
  • Experience in higher education learning environments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and desire to create and follow procedures.
  • Willingness to explore the use of technology and innovative learning and teaching strategies to advance student-centered outcomes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of instructional design.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and FERPA or data privacy principles.
  • Familiarity with best practices for the effective implementation of instructional technology tools in higher education.
  • Ability to collect data, create reports, and prepare written communication with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Personal computers and standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of instructional technologies and equipment used across learning modalities, such as multimedia projectors, sound systems, computers, (Windows/Apple), networking equipment, and tools, supporting hybrid and online instruction.

Working Conditions

Office environment. May be required to travel between campuses. Occasional after-hours and weekend work may be required to support planned system outages, change management activities, or other activities that must be completed outside of regular business hours.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds of equipment with or without accommodation.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.

This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
