Position Purpose: The Access Control Tech I will have skills and knowledge in the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of security and access systems including door hardware, keys, combination and electronically operated locks, and hardware. Working in a service-oriented environment, the Access Control Tech I will successfully communicate with members of the Dartmouth community while carrying out their tasks.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Technical school graduate or have equivalent educational and vocational experience.
  • Must have at least three years of relevant experience, two of which must have been served as an apprentice or equivalent position.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Working knowledge of and demonstrated skills in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical locking systems.
  • Awareness of electronic lock systems and access control systems.
  • Awareness of applicable codes, specifically NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors; International Building Code IBC; American Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and hardware schedules.
  • General knowledge of College Construction Guidelines.
  • Must have skill in the use of hand and power tools, analog/digital test equipment, man lifts, testing devices, and ladders.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Be able to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Computer skills on laptop, tablet and smartphone, and with Microsoft Office software.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Strong customer service orientation.

Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

  • Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fit and Physical Examination
  • Fall Protection
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training
  • EPA R.R.P. Lead Training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possesses skills related to troubleshooting door hardware and locks.
  • Experience with access control systems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Installs new locks and door hardware on interior and exterior doors, files cabinets, and equipment casings as needed and as part of new construction and remodeling projects. This includes determining the appropriate keying required to meet the end users’ needs.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, and maintains existing door hardware, electronic or mechanical, including door closers, ADA operators, and disassembling locks and replacing worn parts using the appropriate techniques as required to ensure proper function of the door.
  • Bypass (“pick”) locks as required using industry standards.
  • Cuts and issues new keys to authorized personnel.
  • Installs, pins, maintains, and repairs mechanical and electrified locks.
  • For security purposes, rekeys locks and changes locker combinations.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes approximately 2,500 lock changes annually for student dorm rooms.
  • Plans and installs key systems in accordance with the Access Control Shop’s practices for master key systems and maintains accurate and up-to-date records of all keys, locks, and other security devices.
  • Maintains record-keeping for inventory of hardware supplies and tools; assists in preparing purchase requisitions as necessary.
  • Plans work details and follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on all equipment and systems as defined above.
  • Reviews drawings and plans recommending appropriate security devices throughout the campus.
  • Enters data into the access control system.
  • Performs electronic door access control programming.
  • Assists in performing the regular testing and maintenance of access control and alarm intrusion systems
  • Coordinates installation with the Department of Safety & Security (DOSS), departments, and various maintenance and operations trades personnel.
  • Determines work methods to accomplish assignments such as repairs, replacements or new installations.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with constituents.
  • Pursues & maintains a working knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Pursues manufacturer’s training for the college’s access control systems (e.g. Lenel, CBORD).

Working Conditions

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, keeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing from up to 120 pounds.
  • Work is performed: indoors; outdoors; in harsh weather; in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present, in underground manholes.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls; gloves; goggles; and ear plugs.
