This position is an 11 month grant funded position.
The Access & Success Advocate will require the individual to become familiar with and work in all areas of operations within the Syracuse University Center for Disability Resources (CDR), the Student Outreach and Success (SOS), and other relevant campus resources that support student success. The individual will work closely with SOS Case Managers and the CDR Access Coordinators to identify and conduct intentional outreach to students with disabilities (SWDs) to address social, emotional, and academic concerns impacting their success and retention. This position will engage with students, faculty, and higher education administrators in the development of effective strategies and intentional programming to retain students with disabilities. It will use a holistic lens it will address institutional barriers through encouraging use of UDL approaches while also directly addressing student social and emotional readiness.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree required; Masters degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Special Education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working in an educational setting, preferably with college-aged students on a college campus.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, technical, and decision-making skills.
- Critical thinking, the ability to think strategically, and problem-solving independently.
- Creative, effective strategies to engage students and increase overall student participation in CDR programming.
- Familiarity with learning assessments, assistive technologies, universal design, and other disability related strategies and interventions.
Responsibilities:
- Provide holistic supports that include one-on-one support as a learning strategist to students who struggle with transitioning to college, academic readiness, and disability identity/disclosure.
- The Access and Success Advocate will implement targeted faculty development initiatives in academic units demonstrating the greatest need for disability resources support. Key activities include:
- Partnering with campus stakeholders to deliver specialized workshops addressing digital accessibility standards, inclusive teaching practices, and disability awareness training.
- Collaborate strategically with the Center for Disability Resources (CDR) access coordinators assigned to specific colleges as liaisons, and the access and inclusion leads within each school and college to identify targeted professional development opportunities, strengthen communication pathways, and increase awareness of CDR operations and supports.
- Oversee timely updates to the CDR website, enhancing both functionality and content to serve prospective students and families better. Updated materials will clarify the distinction between access and success accommodations, outline student responsibilities within the accommodation process, and define CDRs role in facilitating equitable access to educational opportunities.
- Take a lead role in managing CDRs Faculty and Staff Recognition Ceremony and other CDR-sponsored events.
