The Senior Accountant position requires an individual with experience as a senior level accounting professional with strong consideration given to candidates with higher education experience and expertise. Position reports to the Director, Accounting & Reporting in providing oversight and hands-on engagement for all accounting and financial functions in a multi-campus environment.

The person in this position provides support in the management of college financial planning and ensures college accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. Responsibilities include controlling a significant sequence of Business Office activities. Help develop detailed college budgets and cash forecasts; review and monitor financial transactions; help establish and monitor internal controls over all business functions. Assist in recruiting, training, and mentoring employees in the Business & Finance Division. Individual must be capable of making independent decisions relevant to job assignments, including applying skills and knowledge to unusual circumstances with little direct supervision. Individual must exercise good judgment in identifying decisions to be referred for senior management approval.

Min Salary

$77,811.75

Mid Salary

$87,538.22 - We offer a competitive salary package that will be determined based on the candidate's experience level and qualifications related to the job. Compensation will be commensurate with your level of experience.

Duties/Functions

  • Serve as backup for the compilation of state, county, and institutional base budgets.
  • Assist with relevant business and financial matters as needed.
  • Analyze cash management activities including investments to maximize earnings and ensure compliance with college’s approved Cash Management Plan.
  • Complete analysis to ensure that financial statement trends appear reasonable and that significant fluctuations are supported.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.
  • Assist Director, Accounting & Reporting in managing and leading year-end spending activities to help maximize available cash/budgets.
  • Oversee the planning unit objectives for areas of responsibility.
  • Provide leadership for recruiting, training, and mentorship for the performance of employees in the Business Office.
  • Serve as backup in directing financial and operational audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements, and review internal financial policies as needed.
  • Responsible for researching various accounting issues and determining their impact on the financial statements as well as coordinating implementation where applicable.
  • Provide senior management information for decision making as requested and required which may consist of reviewing available historical financial data based on records, reports, past practices, government requirements and GTCC policies.
  • Implement and maintain sound fiscal policies for the college.
  • Audit recording of financial transactions for the college to ensure a proper audit trail and integrity and adequacy of financial systems.
  • Help ensure institutional compliance for various IRS reports.
  • Actively seek out and drive process improvement, automation, and cost-efficient initiatives.
  • Help coordinate implementation of new financial reporting software as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between all areas of the Business Office and other areas of the college.
  • Prepare and conduct training workshops and serve as resource for all college faculty and staff.
  • Monitor and follow up the results of delegated assignments or projects.
  • Demonstrate and model the college’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
  • Participate in various committees as assigned, both college and state level.
  • Represent the college externally to government agencies, funding agencies, and the general public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Daily: President, Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and Managers regarding spending and budgets as well as other business and finance related matters
  • Daily: Business Office Staff regarding questions/guidance on various processes, procedures, and issues
  • Several Times A Week: CFO regarding updates, new projects; staff regarding questions/guidance on processes
  • Annual: Various external auditors

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business/Finance, or related field with a concentration in Accounting.

Education Preferred

  • MBA and/or CPA designation preferred.

Experience Required

  • Minimum ten years of experience in a high-level finance or accounting position to include monthly and annual closings, audits, and supervision of specific departments within Business & Finance Division; i.e., accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchasing, general expense, payroll, etc.
  • Senior level accounting experience and expertise in finance budgeting, accounts receivable/billing, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, and student accounts.
  • Strong internal control and policy implementation experience.

Experience Preferred

  • Minimum five years in a high-level supervisory role preferred.
  • Experience in fund accounting preferred.
  • Higher education experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with IT on systems integration issues preferred.

KSA Required

  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Working knowledge of short and long-term budgeting and forecasting, and profitability analysis.
  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good judgement, planning skills, and leadership traits
  • Must have excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  • Work requires ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and a clear record of financial transactions and financial reports in order to document a clear, organized audit trail.
  • A demonstrated track record of leadership, including technology skills, abilities in financial analysis, communications, and providing customer service.

KSA Preferred

  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations preferred.

Department/Job Specific Requirements

  • Acceptable credit and background check required.
  • The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter: Ethics, FERPA, Safety/Shooter on Campus, Personal Information Protection Training (PIP), Anti-Discrimination/Harassment & Title IX, Other training may be required as determined applicable.
