Description:

The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University invites applicants to apply for adjunct faculty position in the Department of Radio, Television, Film (RTVF) to teach courses within its new Hofstra in L.A. semester program, located on the Emerson College campus in Hollywood, California. The successful candidates will teach a course or courses focused on film and/or television production.

The Hofstra LA Semester provides students with access to on-site Hofstra University courses related to the entertainment industry, internships within their areas of interest, exclusive networking opportunities with alumni and other industry leaders, and planned social events and cultural activities throughout the semester. Students will broaden their understanding of career possibilities, develop skills needed to compete in a highly competitive industry, and establish valuable professional relationships.

Ideal candidate should possess an earned doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) or master's degree in film and television study or a closely related field at the time of appointment.

The candidates should have significant professional experience in Film and Television Studies and should have significant expertise with teaching and scholarly credentials in the area of Film and Television history, theory and aesthetics.

The Adjunct Professor of Film and Television Studies will be responsible to develop and teach the course outlined below:

RTVF 157 – Film Genres: Hofstra LA
Studies of genre cinema emphasize critical, historical, and aesthetic analyses of significant types of motion pictures and television. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, horror, comedy, film noir, Western, melodrama, musical, science fiction, and animated film.
This section, offered exclusively for LA students, focuses on films and television shows set or shot in Los Angeles. Hollywood has long been the heart of the entertainment industry. This course examines its rich history on screen.

Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) or master's degree in film and television study or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Research and scholarship in the area of film and television studies as evidenced by publications of books, or articles in peer reviewed journals; articles or reviews published in newspapers, or nationally recognized online journals, or podcasts.
  • Flexibility to accommodate a teaching schedule.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English is a requirement.
  • Candidate must be available to teach in the Spring 2026 semester.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years teaching film and/or television studies at the university level.
