DEPARTMENT: Mathematics & Computer Science
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the department or program chair.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises students in a classroom setting.
POSITION SUMMARY: The adjunct faculty member teaches one or more undergraduate courses including but not limited to CSCI 121 Intermediate Software Development, CSCI 234 Introduction to Software Engineering, and electives in computer science. Courses will typically be taught on campus in Bethlehem, PA. All adjunct faculty shall fulfill those tasks and discharge those responsibilities arising out of their employment in accordance with the provisions of the Faculty Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching:
- Teach courses as assigned which correlate with the catalog descriptions and course outlines, in a manner designed to assist the student in achieving the specific objectives of the course.
- Provide each student and the department/program head at the beginning of each course a syllabus containing the following (syllabi must also be uploaded into Canvas, the institution’s LMS):
- The goals, objectives and a topical outline of the course content.
- Required textbooks, readings and supplementary texts to be used.
- Attendance, behavior and discipline requirements.
- Planned schedule of lectures and activities.
- Method of evaluating student progress toward and achievement of course goals and objectives, including method by which final grade is derived.
- Internship or project requirements, where appropriate.
- Other advisory information regarding requirements established by the adjunct faculty member for meeting course objectives.
- Provide reasonable accommodations, as specified by the Academic and Disability Support Office, for those students with documented disabilities.
Student Advising/Evaluating:
- Periodically evaluate, inform and assist each student toward achieving course objectives.
- Assign grades to students as appropriate, consistent with the manner identified in the syllabus and with departmental expectations.
- Assist students enrolled in the instructor’s classes on those matters that relate to requirements for graduation, career alternatives/opportunities related to the subject area, and other information as appropriate. In conjunction with a full time faculty advisor and the department chair.
- Track student attendance in Canvas, at least once per week, in accordance with institutional policy and procedures.
- Respond in a timely manner to inquiries from department/program chairs, deans, and members of the student success team regarding the progress of individual students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Qualified candidates must have a Master’s degree in a related field and/or relevant professional/academic experience.
- At least three years teaching experience is required. A track record of successful teaching is desirable.
