Adjunct Instructor, Spanish
Job Description
The Department of Arts & Humanities is seeking an Adjunct Instructor of Spanish to teach a regular load of four classes during the Fall and Spring semesters. This role requires versatility in instructional delivery, as coursework includes both on-campus and online formats, as well as specialized eight-week accelerated courses designed for 100% online degree programs.
Summary/objective
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) invites applications for a pool of qualified Adjunct Instructors in the Department of Arts & Humanities within the College of Arts & Sciences. Adjunct faculty may be assigned to teach: Dual Enrollment (high school students), Undergraduate courses, Graduate-level courses. Assignments may be delivered in face-to-face, hybrid, or online formats depending on departmental needs.
Essential functions
- Deliver instruction aligned with approved course objectives and student learning outcomes across instructional modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, online).
- Teach assigned course(s) (typically 3 credit hours per course) in accordance with the approved schedule.
- Develop and maintain a course syllabus consistent with departmental and University standards.
- Prepare and deliver lectures, assignments, and assessments that effectively measure student learning.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student engagement.
- Provide timely feedback on assignments, examinations, and other assessments.
- Maintain regular and consistent communication with students via University-approved platforms (e.g., email, LMS).
- Hold office hours in accordance with departmental expectations to ensure student access (on-campus or as otherwise approved).
- Submit all required documentation in a timely manner, including but not limited to: Syllabi, Attendance records, Midterm and final grades, Required administrative forms.
- Adhere to all policies outlined in the SUNO Faculty Handbook and applicable Southern University System policies.
- Participate in required meetings, orientations, and training sessions as directed by the Department Chair.
- Support a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Required education and experience
- Master’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching field (or terminal degree where appropriate).
- Demonstrated academic and/or professional experience relevant to the subject area.
- Strong commitment to teaching excellence and student-centered instruction.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching experience in higher education.
- Experience teaching in online, hybrid, or technology-enhanced environments.
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas).
- Experience with Dual Enrollment populations (if applicable).
- Evidence of scholarly, professional, or industry engagement.
