Adjunct Teaching Specialist

About the Job

Adjunct Instructors teach a course or courses in the Leadership Minor, which is a department in partnership between the Office of Student Affairs and Office of Undergraduate Education.

Adjunct instructors work primarily with and are managed by the departmental course curriculum Level Lead(s) to receive curriculum, training, support, and communication. Please note this position strongly prefers in-state residency. This position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card Sponsorship.

Availability

  • LEAD 1961W courses available. We strongly prefer candidates who can teach in-person on weekdays between 8:00AM - 4:00PM. Most of our courses meet for 75 minutes, twice per week during these times.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach a LEAD course or courses, including but not limited to engaging in-class lecture, utilizing active learning methods, offering constructive feedback, coaching and grading student work, and working with and coaching Teaching Interns.
    • If teaching LEAD 3971, teaching responsibilities also include managing 6-10 community partnerships per semester.
    • If teaching a reserved section for specific students (ex. Honors, PES), collaborate with unit staff to discuss student observations, curriculum adaptations, and plan for promoting other unit initiatives to enrolled students.
  • Utilize program curriculum resources (including syllabus, assignments, and Canvas Learning Management System) to create an accessible and interactive learning experience for students consistent with other sections of the course
  • Maintain consistent and timely communication with students, including availability to meet outside of class (i.e. office hours)
  • Provide accountability and coaching while supporting student development
  • Utilize campus resources for student support and development
  • Support department goals for assessment and evaluation, including encouraging student assessment participation and participating in teaching observation
  • Participate in departmental and course-specific instructor training and onboarding, including completing required University of Minnesota training (e.g., Data Security, Preventing & Responding to Sexual Misconduct, etc.)
  • Continue personal development within the field and practices of leadership, higher education, teaching and learning pedagogy, and other expertise connected to the departmental curriculum.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience delivering teaching or training & development that is inclusive, interactive, accessible, and equity-driven
  • Schedule availability for open courses
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Availability to teach in-person during weekdays from 8:00AM - 4:00PM
  • College or university-level teaching experience
  • Experience studying or teaching about Leadership Studies or Organizational Leadership
  • Experience teaching about identities and leadership
  • Experience teaching about or addressing systemic power imbalances
  • Commitment to social change, student agency, and/or education as a liberatory practice
  • In-state residency

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $6,500-$7,000 per semester ; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
