Adult Education and Literacy Instructor
Provide basic skill instruction in the areas of reading, math and language for ABE instructors or English language-acquisition in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking for ESL instructors. The instruction in each subject will be based upon required standardized testing which identifies skills to remediate. After sufficient remediation, the student is tested to measure progress.
The central purpose of the AEL/HSE instructor is to improve the educational skills of the students with the end goal of High School Equivalency attainment. The ABE/HSE instructor is required to administer the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) in the subjects of reading, mathematics, and language to all students upon entry. Training in administering the TABE is required and will be provided. Pretest all students in the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Provide remediation based upon the TABE results. Post-test all students after sufficient remediation. Keep accurate records of all demographic data, testing and remediation. For higher EFL students, the goal is instruction geared to HSE attainment. STLCC ABE/HSE program has developed a curriculum specially designed to prepare students to take and succeed on the HiSET test. The instructor will be expected to execute this curriculum.
The central purpose of the ESL instructor is to give English language lessons to non-native speakers, plan and deliver instruction that accounts for each ELL student’s individual language proficiency level and helps students reach their learning goals and language acquisition expectations based on diagnostic assessment. The ESL instructor is required to administer the Test of Adult Basic Education CLAS-E (TABE CLAS-E) in the subjects of reading, writing, listening, and speaking to all students upon entry. Training in administering the TABE CLAS-E is required and will be provided. Pretest all students in the Test of Adult Basic Education CLAS-E (TABE CLAS-E). Provide remediation based upon the TABE CLAS-E results. Post-test all students after sufficient remediation. Keep accurate records of all demographic data, testing and remediation. For higher EFL students, the goal is instruction geared to transition to HSE attainment, a workforce program, or a secondary program. STLCC ESL instructors will use specific curriculum and resources geared towards the learning goals of the students, which are provided by the program. The instructor will be expected to execute this curriculum.
Education, experience, and other requirements: Bachelor’s degree. Attend Department of Elementary and Secondary Education authorized/required workshops within 3 months of hire. Complete joint certification application upon hire. Complete certification process and be certified within four months of hire. Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in Adult Education and Literacy or similar experience in basic skills instruction.
