Advanced Quantum Testbed Research Scientist

Berkeley Lab's Applied Math and Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an opening in the QuIST (Quantum Information Science and Technology) Group for Research Scientist in support of The Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) project as well as future Quantum Information Science and Technology efforts.

The AQT program is focused on constructing, enhancing, operating, and maintaining an open, fully accessible gate-based quantum computer. Our technology platform is based on superconducting quantum circuit processors, and we aim to generate the detailed experimental findings needed to resolve foundational questions in quantum information science, and to guide near-term hardware and algorithm co-design.

We're here for the same mission, to bring science solutions to the world. Join our team and YOU will play a supporting role in our goal to address global challenges! Have a high level of impact and work for an organization associated with 17 Nobel Prizes!

Why join Berkeley Lab?

We invest in our employees by offering a total rewards package you can count on:

  • Exceptional health and retirement benefits, including pension or 401K-style plans
  • A culture where you'll belong - we are invested in our teams!
  • In addition to accruing vacation and sick time, we also have a Winter Holiday Shutdown every year.
  • Parental bonding leave (for both mothers and fathers)

You will:

  • Design of superconducting electronic devices with emphasis on superconducting quantum processors with emphasis in qubit crosstalk mitigation and overall processor fidelity improvement.
  • Fabrication of superconducting electronic devices with emphasis on superconducting quantum processors with
  • Device characterization and optimization
  • Design and conduct state-of-the-art experiments such as superconducting quantum processors
  • Troubleshoot noise processes on quantum hardware and design and implement mitigation strategies
  • Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data
  • Supervise group post-doctoral candidates and graduate students as required
  • Operating, optimizing and maintaining a dilution refrigerator for state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processor operation

We are looking for:

  • Typically requires a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of two (2)years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in design of superconducting electronics and quantum processors
  • Experience in fabrication of superconducting electronics and quantum processors
  • Experience independently planning and completing projects
  • Experience operating, optimizing and maintaining a dilution refrigerator.
  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results
  • Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above
  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students
  • Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students
  • Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports
  • Experience using Python based programming tools

Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time, 5 years, career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. A Career position will be considered for those who have relevant experience or for existing Career-Track or Term staff who have already exhausted the number of years eligible to hold a Career-Track role.
  • Salary range: The targeted salary range of this position is between $145,000 to $165,000 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work modality: Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States. A REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
