Job Description
Basic Function:
Responsible for teaching lecture and laboratory classes in beginning, intermediate and advanced American Sign Language (ASL). The assignment may also include courses in conversation and in culture, or other courses in the discipline.
Education:
Bachelor's degree and two years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience; OR Associate's degree and six years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience; OR the equivalent is required. Master's degree in ASL and deaf studies, ASL curriculum, or ASL linguistics is preferred. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions.)
Experience:
A minimum of two years of successful experience teaching ASL classes at the college level is desirable. Evidence of online instruction is also desired.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Native or near-native fluency in ASL and in English
- An ASLPI assessment rating of 4.0 or better
- A demonstrated general knowledge of interpretation and issues relevant to sign language interpreting
- Demonstrated knowledge of current theories in language acquisition and experience with modern language teaching methodologies
- Knowledge of or experience with technology in the context of second language instruction such as language lab operations and software
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in student learning outcomes assessment
- Adherence to standards of professional credentials such as ASLTA (American Sign Language Teaching Association)
Licenses/Certifications:
Current membership in ASLTA and related professional memberships desired.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will, among other things:
- The instructional assignment will include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline.
- Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
- Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
- Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling and other matters are also expected of all department faculty.
- Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
- Fulfill the duties of a full-time instructor, including, but not limited to, holding weekly office hours and completing 24 hours of "flex credit" through various available activities and seminars.
Conditions of Employment:
- Ten-month, tenure-track position.
- Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column B, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
- Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
- A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
- Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
- Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is also expected.
- Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
