Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a Anatomical and Surgical Skills Laboratory Technician to join Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research), Academic Division.
We are looking for a Technician to join the teams of the Anatomical and Surgical Skills Laboratory (ASSL) at the Medical Engineering Research Facility of the Queensland University of Technology. This full-time role for an initial appointment of 2 years will be based on the campus of The Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside. The position provides technical assistance to the Anatomical and Surgical Skills Manager in the provision of surgical skills training, anatomy education and research activities in the MERF Anatomical and Surgical Skills Laboratory (ASSL) using the donors of QUT’s Body Bequest Program. The position also provides assistance to the Body Bequest Coordinator in the receipt, handling and disposal of donors of the QUT Body Bequest Program. The respectful treatment of the donors of QUT’s Body Bequest Program is at the core of all activities in the laboratory.

The Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF) at The Prince Charles Hospital is one of the distributed sites of QUT's Research Infrastructure office. The facility provides a comprehensive suite of facilities with unique capabilities to support researchers in taking novel concepts from basic research to clinical implementation. MERF’s Anatomical Surgical Skills Laboratory (ASSL) provides a realistic environment for academic research, anatomy teaching and/or practical skills training of new and existing surgical medical procedures or implants for health professionals, resulting in better quality of care for Queensland patients and fewer complications..
What you need to succeed
- Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of an associate diploma level qualification with relevant work related experience or a certificate level qualification with post-certificate relevant work experience.
- Experience in handling and working with deceased human bodies and body parts and/or be willing to be trained in these areas.
- Demonstrated experience in similar and/or comparable laboratory environments (eg general anatomical laboratories, anatomy facilities and/or mortuaries, hospital operating rooms, etc.) with particular attention to the setup and pull down/post rehabilitation of a laboratory/surgical operating theatre, and familiarity with the requirements for personal protective equipment to work in these areas.
- Ability to meet the demanding manual handling requirements of the position, in particular related to the movement of donors and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to follow written instructions and ability to maintain records with a high degree of accuracy, including the use of computer software packages, such as Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team, and prioritise and organise workflows with a minimum of supervision.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively connect and collaborate to achieve team based outcomes in a complex and changing environment at times with minimal supervision.
