We’re seeking an experienced and dynamic Head, Field Operations to support the University’s field stations and research services, ensuring our researchers, students, and partners have access to high‑quality, safe and efficient facilities.

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead operations across multiple unique research environments and help drive impactful scientific and educational outcomes.

The Opportunity

As the Head, Field Operations, you will:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership across JCU’s field stations and field‑based research services.
  • Develop streamlined, consistent procedures that strengthen service delivery, safety, and user experience across all facilities.
  • Partner closely with field station managers, researchers, and the Dean, Research to support teaching, research, and engagement activities.
  • Lead and mentor field operations staff, fostering a high‑performing, collaborative team culture.
  • Oversee operational planning, budgets, fee structures, compliance, and WHS processes.
  • Contribute to business planning and promote optimal use of JCU’s infrastructure to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Step in to manage or backfill field station leadership roles when required.

About You

You will bring:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field and extensive experience in managing research or education field stations/services.
  • Strong operational and leadership experience in a research, technical, or field‑based environment.
  • Demonstrated capability in planning, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Advanced, up‑to‑date knowledge of WHS regulations relevant to field‑based research.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities, assess risk, and deliver improvements.
  • Experience working in regional or multi‑site environments (desirable).
  • Qualifications and/or experience in boating, diving, and remote‑area safety (or ability to obtain).
  • Relevant certifications such as Remote Area First Aid, CPR, Oxygen Provider, and WHS training (or ability to obtain).
