Anthropology in Museum Archives Project Archivist

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The AMNH Museum Archives, housed in the Gottesman Research Library, is seeking a full-time Anthropology in Museum Archives Project Archivist for one year. In collaboration with Archives and other Museum staff, the Project Archivist will lead an effort to pilot a survey of non-published Anthropology-related materials stored at the Museum's Research Library. The pilot survey will provide an opportunity to begin to enrich the material's foundational description, review collection metadata and better define how the materials may connect to other related archival collections.

The expected salary range for the Anthropology in Museum Archives Project Archivist is $65,000/annual - $70,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional archival experience in a museum or academic setting or with institutional archives.
  • Familiarity with basic preservation of archival materials, including proper handling, housing and storage.
  • Awareness of current developments, trends and emerging technologies in the field of archives and records management.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Protocols for Native American Archival Materials.
  • Experience managing staff, interns or volunteers in an archive setting.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills including accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with rights management and appraising restricted materials.
  • Demonstrated experience/familiarity with Airtable software.
  • Experience with or interest in digitization projects.
  • Certified Archivist certificate.
