About This Opportunity
The University of Queensland is seeking an experienced Aquatic Technical Coordinator to play a pivotal role in supervising staff and coordinating the day-to-day delivery of high-quality Aquatic animal husbandry and research support services within a complex, regulated research environment across the aquatic facilities. This position provides specialist technical leadership across aquatic and laboratory animal operations, supporting sophisticated breeding programs, advanced research procedures, and the highest standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, and regulatory compliance. Working closely with researchers, students, and technical staff, you will combine hands-on expertise with supervision and training responsibilities, contributing directly to the success of cutting-edge research and the safe, efficient operation of specialised research facilities.
Key responsibilities will include:
Deliver expert Aquatic animal husbandry and technical research support, including the management of breeding programs, advanced procedures, and the highest standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, and regulatory compliance.
Provide technical leadership within specialised research environments, operating independently across complex facilities and supporting health monitoring, disease surveillance, and compliance requirements.
Train, supervise, and mentor staff, students, and researchers, developing capability in operational procedures, , and regulatory obligations.
Support the effective operation of the facility through collaboration with management on service delivery, supervision of staff, and contribution to training materials and service level agreements.

About You
A relevant degree (e.g. animal science) or substantial specialist experience within the animal technology or research sector, with the ability to operate effectively in complex research environments.
Ability to support teams across specialised and highly regulated facilities, with well-developed problem-solving skills and adaptability across diverse research settings.
Experience supervising, training, and mentoring staff or students, with a collaborative approach to building capability and maintaining high operational standards.
Demonstrated commitment to best-practice animal welfare, husbandry, biosafety, and biosecurity, supported by sound knowledge of regulatory and ethical frameworks.
Proven experience managing breeding programs and supporting research activities, including accurate record keeping and compliance-driven data management.
Hands-on technical capability, including experience with euthanasia and exposure to advanced animal procedures, considered advantageous.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, criminal check, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification.
You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
Medical Clearance
Working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement of the position. The appointment is therefore subject to, and conditional upon, satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. In addition, the Employee is required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures associated with the position.
