Description: The Arborist is responsible for the care, maintenance, and management of trees and woody plants across the University of Houston Campuses. This role ensures the health, safety, and aesthetic value of the landscape through regular inspections, pruning, planting, removal, and treatment of trees and woody plants. The Arborist applies industry best practices in tree and woody plant biology, risk assessment, pest and disease management, and soil care while adhering to safety standards and environmental stewardship. The position requires hands-on work with a variety of landscape care equipment as well as collaboration with Facilities Planning team in developing long-range tree and canopy management strategies, species standards or heritage tree preservation practices.

1. Perform routine, preventative, and corrective tree and woody plant care including planting, watering, fertilizing, aeration, pruning, cabling, staking, and treatments to support plant health, safety, and campus aesthetics.
2. Assess, diagnose, and monitor tree and woody plant health, including identifying pests, disease, structural defects, and environmental stressors, and implement appropriate corrective actions.
3. Evaluate trees for structural integrity and risk to people, buildings, walkways, utilities, and campus operations, including recommending and overseeing removals when necessary.
4. Respond to emergency tree and woody plant situations caused by weather events, accidents, or hazardous conditions to mitigate risk and restore safety.
5. Operate, maintain, and ensure safe use of arboricultural tools, equipment, and machinery in compliance with safety and environmental standards.
6. Coordinate and collaborate with team members, supervisors, landscape architects, grounds staff, and construction teams to execute arboricultural work and protect trees during campus projects.
7. Provide technical guidance on species selection, planting locations, sustainable practices, and campus tree preservation and management strategies, including support of long-term plans.
8. Maintain accurate records and inventories related to tree inspections, treatments, maintenance activities, and assets, and communicate work activities and safety considerations as needed.
9. Other duties as assigned.

MQ: Education: Requires the ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures, policies and practices attainable through specific education and/or training programs in a specialty or technical field. Advanced vocational or electronic skills or a basic knowledge of a professional field is required. An Associate's degree or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to 3 years duration are characteristics of this field. Preferred: Bachelors in Arboriculture, Horticulture, or a closely related field of study.
Experience: Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience. Certification: Must be a Certified Arborist or ability to obtain within first 9 months of employment.
- Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience.
