Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Area Coordinator (AC) is a 12-month live-in staff member responsible for all facets of the Housing and Residential Services program for their assigned residential area. The AC serves as a front-line responder in on-campus emergency situations and is required to work daytime, on-duty, and non-traditional hours including nights, weekends and break periods. The AC is responsible for directly supervising, training, developing, and evaluating assistant resident director, and resident assistants. The primary goal of the position is to establish a cohesive and inclusive residential community utilizing diversity and social justice practices to promote student success. The AC is expected to be knowledgeable of and enforce university policies and procedures, be available to students and make referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments as necessary.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Provides supervision to two Resident Directors (RDs), the Lead Resident Assistant(s) (LRAs) and the Resident Assistants (RAs) in their assigned residential areas. Depending on the residential area, the AC may also supervise Community Desk Assistants (CDAs).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

STAFFING:

  1. Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate area staff including: Resident Director, Lead Residen Assistants, Resident Assistants, and Community Desk Assistants.
  2. Residence Hall supervision includes Aubuchon Hall, Herlihy Hall, and Russell Towers.
  3. Hold regular individual supervisory meetings and staff meetings.
  4. Develop working relationships with the maintainer within the building(s).
  5. Participate in the coordination and delivery of in-service training 3 times per semester.
  6. Participate in the coordination and delivery of the annual August and January Lead Resident Assistant and Resident Assistant training.

ADMINISTRATIVE:

  1. Provide general day to day management of the assigned residential area (consisting of 500-600 residential students).
  2. Serve in the Administrator on Call (AOC) rotation for after-hours response to critical issues.
  3. Participate in recruitment, selection and training of student staff members.
  4. Plan and coordinate personnel and other resources necessary for the opening and closing of the residence halls at the beginning and end of each semester, vacation periods, and other breaks in the academic schedule.
  5. Oversee room changes in coordination with the Assistant Director and manage Room Condition Reports for their assigned area.
  6. Mediate roommate conflicts as necessary.
  7. Conduct health and safety inspections of student rooms twice per semester and as needed.
  8. Allocate and maintain the programming budget for the assigned area.
  9. Coordinate maintenance requests for the assigned residential area and report needed repairs.
  10. Conduct weekly checks of assigned residential areas to build community and assess damage/vandalism. Conduct damage investigations and coordinate common areas damage billing as necessary.
  11. Attend all staff meetings and professional development sessions as determined by Housing & Residential Services and/or Student Affairs.
  12. Support and attend University events and programs.
  13. Maintain social media outlets for the assigned residential area.
  14. Co-coordinate residential summer orientation and serve as a co-coordinator for assigned summer conference and/or summer housing programs.

PROGRAMMATIC:

  1. Oversee Resident Assistant programming as outlined by the program model.
  2. Manage the programming budget for the assigned area.
  3. Conduct necessary residential area meetings for students as needed (i.e. opening/closing each semester).

COMMUNITY STANDARDS:

  1. Serve as a hearing officer and adjudicate assigned cases.
  2. Conduct investigations following protocol outlined by the student conduct process.
  3. Enforce policies within your assigned area and coordinate with University Police and other offices as needed.
  4. Ensure compliance with University, local, and state policies.

OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Counsel individual students regarding personal concerns and issues.
  2. Represent the department at professional meetings.
  3. Serve as a role model and mentor for students.
  4. Assist with office projects and initiatives as assigned by the Director of Residence Life or designee.
  5. Participate in divisional committees, task forces and projects as assigned by the Director of Residence Life or designee.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Work weekends and evenings as needed.
  2. Supervise professional and paraprofessional staff in residential areas.
  3. Fulfill on-call requirements including confrontation of behavior in violation of university policies, as well as responding to all residence halls when needed.
  4. Assist in maintaining the safety and security of residents and the residence hall(s) during emergency situations.
  5. Complete administrative tasks as required.
  6. Use and learn computer programs.
  7. Communicate in written and oral form.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of 3 years live-in staff experience, including supervision at the RA/student level.
  2. Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion work and the ability to appropriately and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences within a group environment.
  3. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  4. Interpersonal skills including the ability to relate and engage with a diverse student population.
  5. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems
  6. Board/Sexual Offender Registry Information (CORI/SORI check); a background check
  7. satisfactory to the university.
  8. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate university vehicle(s).
  9. Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Previous experience working in Residence Education.
  2. Experience with supervision of graduate level staff.
  3. Master's Degree.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position in the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) bargaining unit with a union title of Staff Assistant. The starting salary range is $50,000 to $54,000 commensurate with education and experience. This position is live on and includes an apartment, with utilities and internet. A meal plan while classes are in session during the academic year. This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
